I we we beat USM this Saturday, there's a real good chance we end up 8-1 by the time we travel to Marshall. And the Herd ain't looking so invincible these days. Win there, and it's highly likely we finish 11-1, or with a loss to UAB, 10-2.
Yeah, a couple of weeks ago I was saying that IF we get past USM, the schedule sets up nicely for us. Winning out isn’t outside the realm of possibility.
I love all this optimism, 11-1? Hope it happens. But until I actually see something more out of the "rock star" and ole Skippy, I'm sticking with 7-5.
So far, at 5-1, we are exactly on schedule in my game by game predictions. But, I have USM as an L. If the Dawgs can reverse that, then I'll revise my prediction to 8-4.
As for Saturday, as it stands now, I'm thinking USM 38 Tech 23
For the Dawgs to win this game the defense needs to really step up. USM will lean heavily on the short passing attack. We have to take that away. Even if that means we get beat over the top once or twice, we need to stick to over-playing the short passing attack. It's what they do, so we HAVE to take that away. Make them have to beat us by doing something different. If, big IF, the D is successful in doing that, we have a shot of taking a close win. And of course the "rock star" can't screw things up, and Hale can't miss FGs, and...
I am concerned. I'm not sure our defense can stop Jack Abraham and Co. Look at this defensive play from last year's USM game:

That's the kind of defensive silliness that will get our team embarrassed.

Crazy that we held their O to 3 in the second half. Boxerdog said we needed to make Abraham press. He was right.
Abraham is now 2-6 away from Hattiesburg.
The D did step up. Not only the 4 takeaways, but consistent tough play; great pass rush, TFLs, pass break-ups, some good tackling. Tremendous 2nd half!
Smith had a good game. Made some plays, the long one to Stanley at the end of the 1st half especially. TWO 4th down gambles, wow!
But, of course, it's the Dawgs and the coaches who get the kudos.
WE ARE BOWL ELIGIBLE! Rest the starters the rest of the way, save 'em for the bowl game.
If you read this board at all last week, that's what a lot of us said. Everybody knew we needed to keep pressure on USM's QB. It's just that most of us didn't think we could do it.
