Re: 2020 LA Tech Football Recruit Commit List
Fail at recruiting QBs and punters? That is, should be!, a given at Tech. Historically we've always had good (great) QBs and punters and kickers too!
I wish we'd be more aggressive going after 5A players in-state. Of course we wouldn't sign everyone we recruited, but dern, at least try. Well, maybe we are trying...just failing.

Re: 2020 LA Tech Football Recruit Commit List
I'm speaking of 4A and 5A guys with the talent who we will only offer a "preferred walk on" spot. It seems good grades actually hurt their playing chances. We've had MANY of them here under Holtz and going back to Hunter Lee. Some actually got a chance to shine and proved Holtz wrong (or that they could play). Some got a peak at playing time, but Holtz just ignored their ability and stuck his perceived #1 back in as the starter.
BTW, Holtz seems to love these "preferred walk on guys" to help keep his team GPA and graduation rate up.

Re: 2020 LA Tech Football Recruit Commit List
I do credit Skip Holtz for stabilizing our program, improving our recruiting, running a clean program and taking us a few steps forward on the field. But IMO, his best accomplishments: A 10 win season and much improved recruiting.
But you and I both know that almost half of those wins were against some of the worst teams in America (Grambling, UMASS, Rice, UTEP & Bowling Green). Nevertheless, I give credit where its due, and he's a hell of a recruiter. During the early signing period, Holtz just signed the #1 recruiting class in CUSA.
In the early signing period that just ended --according to 247 Sports-- LA Tech SIGNED 12 of the top 100 recruits in the state of LA. LSU only signed 7 of the top 100, mostly because their recruiting is more national in flavor. But Tulane only signed 6 of Louisiana's Top 100, ULL signed 7, Baylor 3, TCU 3, Kansas 3, Memphis 2, ULM 2, Houston 2, Georgia 2, Ole Miss 2, Vandy 2, and Virginia 2. 17 more schools from out of state signed 1 of Louisiana's Top 100 players. About a quarter of Louisiana't top 100 recruits still have not signed. Tech also signed 6 recruits from Texas --including highly rated QB JD Head-- and 3 from Mississippi.
As long as Louisiana and Texas continue to put out premium athletes, LA Tech should always be competitive.

Re: 2020 LA Tech Football Recruit Commit List
Louisiana and Texas are two of the top 5 states in the nation for high school football. More "highly rated" recruits come out of Louisiana, per capita, then any other state and it's not even close...for whoever is in 2nd place. You can build a national championship caliber college football team/program from just Louisiana kids. All that to say, yes, a program like Tech with our tradition should be able sign really good players "just because!" And, we do. Let's just get some more of 'em!
Now that Holtz finally checked that 10-win box, that's a feather in his cap. We all know what's left on the list. And! if/when he does check all of those off, all that means is a new set of goals to seek. That's the way it works in sports/competition. You're NEVER through striving for more. Always a taller mountain to climb.
