The Columbia Blue usage came from Coach Maxie Lambright's popular football travel uniforms: Red Helmet, white jersey and Columbia blue pants BEFORE there was a Lady Techsters team.
That's how Columbia Blue seeped into the Tech culture of royal blue.

What is the real story of the columbia blue? I would be okay if the real story was that the supplier didn't have a deeper blue or we just didn't know what shade of blue to go with. We didn't have a real standard of logo, wordmarks, and colors back then.

In the 1975-76 season, Mens basketball coach Emmett Hendricks ordered new uniforms.
He liked the color of the Columbia blue pants used by football coach Maxie Lambright for their road uniform pants (red helmet, white jersey, Columbia pants).
I was the student trainer-manager (which means I laundered those unis).
The Lady Techsters used the same color scheme for the same reason. Later, Sonja Hogg tried to go with a powder/baby blue color because when the gals sweated (perspired) she didn't like the darker blue they became.
That is about as real as it gets. Athletics director Maxie Lambright is the first coach to use Columbia Blue at Tech.

If Konkel's bunch can even come anywhere close to accomplishing what Russo's team did while wearing those unis, I say keep them for the whole season.
I found this throwback video from those awesome wonderful days. It even has footage from when we broke Lamar's 80 game home winning streak in Beaumont.
Karl, Willie, Wayne Smith, Rennie Bailey, Alan Davis (AD), Robert Godbolt, David Jordan, who I am forgetting?
