Funny both teams feature pick axes in their logos. CUSA is lucky.
Speaking of luck, Western Kentucky jumped all over the SEC cellar dwellar.
USM beat down UAB.
The dawgs are going to run the table.

Charlotte might make their first bowl game this year. That's not bad for a team that didn't exist 7 years ago.
All it takes to get bowl eligible playing in CUSA is at least 11 guys with a pulse...
CUSA is horrible! Now 11-30 vs. FBS OOC, 1-19 vs. P5s. (thanks to WKU beating a gawd-awful Arkie team). Take heart though, the MAC is even worse. So, we have that going for us.
I keep hearing that......but I'm not convinced its true.
-- WKU (6-4) ran Arkansas out of the stadium yesterday, winning 45-19. WKU also beat Army, 17-8 OOC, and have an impressive 4-2 record in CUSA.
-- USM's (6-3) only 3 losses have been to us, Alabama & Miss State. All tough road games. They also won a shootout at Troy (whom many of you seem to respect) and beat a tough UAB 37-2 yesterday. By any measure, USM is really right where they are supposed to be.
-- Charlotte (5-5) beat UNT 39-38 a couple of weeks ago, has won 3 straight and has gotten steadily better this season. Much improved.
-- UNT (4-6) looked awful against LA Tech last night. But the Mean Green has played a very tough schedule this season. In OOC games, they lost a close game to CAL (23-17), lost to Houston and lost to a much improved SMU buzzsaw. IN short, UNT has just about rode the "Mason Fine" pony as far as it can take them. But they don't suck. Prior to UNT's meeting with Tech last night, Fine had thrown 12 TD passes in UNT's last 2 games. That's astounding.
-- Marshall's (6-3) season has been much like ours. They've won the games they were supposed to win, and lost the one's they were supposed to lose. But clearly they have to be a talented team to go into Boise and lose by a score of only 14-7. Best CUSA win was vs FAU 36-31 at Boca Raton.
-- FAU (7-3) is another school winning the ones they are supposed to win, and losing the ones they are supposed to lose. Their three losses are at #1 Ohio State (45-21), top G5 school UCF and Marshall. If we're honest, FAU is right where they are supposed to be.
-- UAB (6-3). While I agree that there's nothing impressive about UAB's 2019 schedule, here they are at 6-3, with a chance to defend their CUSA title.
-- LA Tech (8-1) Okay, I'll say it one more time: Tech is winning the games they are supposed to win, and lost the one (1) game they were supposed to lose. The biggest surprise to me is they haven't lost that annual "WTF" game that we so often worry about as fans. (I think Rice and/or Grambling was supposed to be our WTF, but we escaped.) I do think LA Tech is for real. After 7 seasons at the helm, I think Skip Holtz finally has the right mix of senior leadership and talent at most positions to win a CUSA title. We'll find out this Friday just how good this team is when they travel to Marshall. Marshall is very beatable, but unlike UNT, Marshall can match us on talent, and they are not going to roll over and quit like UNT did last night.
IMO, all of these CUSA schools have very solid football teams this year. One of the problems with trying to measure how good the conference is has to do with the large size. Any conference with 12 or 14 members is going to have laggards in the lower half. And CUSA is no different. But every year, the Big 10 -for example-- (which has 12 schools) has somebody finishing 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th. But most people don't say "man, the Big 10 sucks! this year". It's the same for the SEC, the PAC 12 and the AAC.
For some reason, college football fans like to judge these conferences by the performances of their top performing schools, and not the laggards. And yet, with CUSA, we seem to want to judge the conference based upon the performances of the laggards, and not the top performing schools. Go figure.
Every P-5 conference seems to be identified by their top 3-5 programs, no one talks about the Vanderbilts, Kentuckys, Ole Miss, etc.....
We seem to do just the opposite in the G-5, even though our groups do seem to consume a lot of the bottom 25. I never gave it much thought, but that is the perception that has been created. I think we fail to showcase our school(s) and that falls at the feet of the Conference, the administration, and us as fans. We also have to start playing "someone" during the season, we need a Texas, Arkansas, etc..mid-season when our teams are starting to peak if we want recognition and being showcased. JMHO
I've often thought CUSA is a bifurcated conference with good competitive teams at the top and the worst at the bottom. For example, last year, CUSA had the best winning percentage of the bowl season.
Big Ten is actually the Big Fourteen. Rutgers is close to an 8 (that's right, eight) TD underdog to Ohio State this week. Also Maryland just got beat by Ohio State by 59.
