    Improving Tech's recruiting opportunities

I had an off-forum discussion with a forum member yesterday. We discussed how LSU having the year they are having, next two games at home, at night, that they will most likely win. This, along with Heisman, National Championsip, could generate more 4, definitely 5 stars wanting to go to LSU. This is all good for LSU, but you get a "saturation point" where an incoming freshman man not start for two years, generally just see less on-field play than if they came to Tech. I'm not saying we will start loading up on 4 and 5 stars, but definitely 3 stars, and maybe some 4s. Call it the Amik Plan; come to Tech, play 2-3 years, and enter the draft. Obviously, this mainly applies to the footprint we are recruiting in now.

Conversely, how will SMU's rise affect us recruiting in the MetroPlex? I say if Sonny stays, it can hurt us. If Sonny goes, it is good for us.

    Thoughts?

I don't see how LSU's success hurts us. I do think Coach O is trying to keep the talent in-state.

I hope Amik's success shows that Tech is a place that you can come and play right away (if you are Amik good). I hope he can turn the success into a payday for himself.

I believe there is enough talent in DFW that it won't effect us too much. There's only so many players SMU can get.

iirc, this has been DFM's position for some years now.

I think it's pretty weak sauce.

I agree. IMO, lsu's success hurts our chances of gaining fans, but helps our recruiting.

Not concerned about SMU with Dykes. He is going heavy juco again and will be gone when the first offer from a P5 comes along. Just curious. How is SMU's attendance? The last game I watched they were far from full and the stadium only holds like 25K right?

Our lack of stipends will be our biggest recruiting drawback among peers.

I agree 100%. Also the lack of a extra student fee for athletics.

Thanks. The game I saw was probably closer to 25k than what I thought. Not bad for SMU

There are a lot of quality athletes in Ennis TX. Current HC there is a legend in Tx high school football. HC’s son is currently on staff at USC... Current AD of Ennis ISD is a graduate of La Tech.

    Re: Improving Tech's recruiting opportunities

I think our program is still a long way from getting legit 4 or 5 star high school recruits. The overflow of the top tier P5 recruits (4 & 5 star) trickle down to other P5 programs. Time and time again the lure for one of those guys staying close to home (as in within 5hr drive of home) and starting as a freshman at Louisiana Tech doesn’t happen. It may have with some 2 and 3 star recruits in recent years.

5 star Ed Oliver from Houston area committing to University of Houston is one exception, but the Houston program is ahead of ours. Who knows what Tom Herman or his minions did there. Yeah, we have been closer to Houston in the last decade at competing on the field and for some recruits, but overall we have a way to go.

    Re: Improving Tech's recruiting opportunities

We won’t ever land many 4 star or above players. We don’t need to in my opinion. Player development is infinitely more important to schools like Tech. When HS players see 2-3 star athletes coming to Tech and making the NFL, recruitment of those players becomes easier. Boise has made a living off recruiting and developing those type players.

SMU does struggle with attendance from their students, staff and alums, its a small school and they have never been able to sustain a good local tradition of attending football games. They are currently marketing hard attempting to make SMU "Dallas's team" in an attempt push attendance. The pregame tailgating on the "Boulevard" has been strong, but many participating don't go to the game.
