I would rather us not play in S’Port. I don’t ever want them to get the satisfaction of telling themselves they did us a favor. I can attend if it’s in DFW or NOLA. Other than that, the funds won’t be there to travel and stay overnight.

Unfortunately we probably played ourselves out of having a choice.
That said, if Indy can manage to entice an ACC team, I wouldn't say no.
I really wish we would play outside of Louisiana. Tech is respected much more outside of Louisiana, away from the LSU suck-ups, most of who never took one class there. I agree that that dump of a stadium in Shreveport is no reward for our guys.
This said, I hear its us vs Florida State in Shreveport.
I am okay with any location, but we REALLY need to play a P5 team. Appy State might be ranked, but that means nothing for reputation points in the general public. The New Orleans Bowl is actually a good bowl, but will always be considered as a minor league bowl before a Sugar Bowl. When we play a Sun Belt team, it just says we are on that level - no matter if we were to beat them by 40 points. We have a name outside of Louisiana and need to play P5's, even if not all the locals understand that. Social media is the only way to get your name out there these days and, no matter what their ranking or record, a P5 is MUCH better than a G5 opponent - especially a belt one.
First, please, let's not join the chorus of belittling G5 programs just because they happened to not be part of the chosen ones. Appy State has a good team and a very, very, fine program...located in little ole Boone, North Carolina. Playing them this year, as a ranked opponent, would be a good matchup, a real challenge for Tech. And! the N.O. Bowl rocks! They do a great job of putting on a spectacular event, before and after the game. And...I just love the Dome. Awesome venue, with plenty of great memories for many of us.
It's also true Shreveport (and Indy Stadium) is a dump, with an azz-clown for mayor. But getting a P5 opponent...Florida State?...would make it worth it. Hold your nose and pack Indy, if that happens.
Playing a ranked team meant everything when we played Navy who was not ranked at the time we actually played them.
Beating A State in New Orleans is worth more in recruiting battles against our peers than beating a bad ACC team in a dump.
I was hoping you'd disagree for this reason...
"casual fans" would hear more about it because EllAye Tech get's blasted over the local air waves for a good three weeks.
...I'll go with that, but don't expect the "causal fan" to even hear about it 24 hours after the game. We have like 2 media people in Shreveport who care to mention Tech and many more who hate our guts. Those are the ones with the loudest voice.
Agreed. Beating a P5 is the only way to gain interest from the casual fans. The majority of casual (ignorant) college football fans in this state think that Tech is in Div 2 basically. They don't think Tech is in the same division of LSU. People want to support the best, they don't care too much about, in their mind, lower level schools. Our number one priority should be to play P5s in bowl games so casual fans start to equate Tech with P5 programs and thus we gain interest from them.
After that our next priority is a top 25 G5 football program. Appalachian State would be a great match and they are a recognizable name. However many people still think this is Appalachian state from 2007 when they defeated Michigan, meaning they think it's the team from a lower division. I am not trying to knock down Appalachian State, I really respect what they've done. I'm just trying to show how the casual football fans think and the best way to get their interest into Tech. I think this match-up would be just a little level below playing a P5. We've played Boise State in Ruston when they were top 10 and we played Navy in a bowl game when they were ranked. Neither of those saw a big bump in interest from fans like beating a P5 would I think.
As for recruiting, I'm not too familiar with how the bowl choices we have would affect it so I'll leave that for others. For my personal bowl wish list it would be 1) a p5 program, 2) a ranked g5, 3) any regional bowl game. I'd be be happy with the first two, I'd be fine with the third. After that and it's really just indifference after experiencing the letdown from the end of this season.

I would love to see one of these "casual Tech fans" in the wild. I thought I saw one once, but we lost, didn't make the top 25, got shut out of getting into a conference, insert all the ways we have shot ourselves in the foot over the years.... Turns out it wasn't a casual Tech fan, just a LSU fan who couldn't find the T-shirt they bought at wal-mart.
It would mean more to me to beat a good G5 team than a bad P5 team.
I like beating P5 teams, but I also follow college football enough to know that App State is a better team than say, Florida State or Boston College.
I understand the arguments about casual fans and the eyes of the nation and recruiting and all that - but I'm kind of past caring about that stuff. I can't control it (we can't control it for the most part), so why break my head worrying about it. We're in a bowl again. If you were in school during the Independent years, that's still a nice thing. We won 9, and have the chance to win 10. That's a nice thing. It's not as good as winning a conference title, or trying to win our 13th game in the bowl, but it's better than the last two seasons for sure.
I want to enjoy bowl season. I don't have to raise money for Tech. I don't have to recruit to Tech. I don't have to sell tickets for the bowl. So if it's a bad team we draw, I'll be all in on extending our bowl win streak (P5 or G5). If it's a good G5, I'll worry some - but I feel like I'll know what that means, even if others may not. If it's a good P5, then we're playing with house money.
If it's close, I'll try to go. If it's far, I'll try to watch.
I'm trying not to overthink it this year.
