You are buying in to the Rock Star excuses for his first two years as starter. Was Rattay responsible for the way Smith played in the Indy Bowl? That's the Rock Star we fans had to endure, but Holtz, not Rattay was "coaching him up". Holtz has admitted this.

By that measure, the center led the team. But no, none of that makes them a leader. They're just another player on the field.

The players know who the real leaders are and they never voted J'Mar "Captain", even when he was a senior. He may have athletic ability and arm strength, but something was missing that caused his own teammates to vote other players team captain and not him.
