But it ranks right up there with John Lennon's murder, Stevie Ray Vaughn dying in a copter crash, the Lynyrd Skynrd plane crash, Pistol Pete's heart attack and Reagan getting shot (even though he survived)…

I'd put Davey Allison in that group. Reagan had a different shock value for me.

Bryant had at least one of his daughters with him on the flight. Five total deaths. Wow!

To me this was like Dale Earnhardt - except you didn't watch it live

Those are the only two professional athletes that were literally kings of their sports when taken - difference Kobe being retired for a few years
