NBA has such a global footprint and Kobe was the Jordan of my generation (born early 90s)
This was shocking.. I couldn’t believe it when I heard. One of my favorite athletes ever. And millions of others. Sad day for sports

Payne Stewart came to mind this morning. They way that happened was unusual.
John Altobelli, baseball coach at Orange Community College, his wife and daughter reported among dead in the crash.
I was think about this on the way to drop Kyle off to school this morning, he asked me if something like this had ever happened before to a big sports star -
I had just got into baseball when Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash on a humanitarian mission, I don't know why I didn't remember him yesterday...
And Thurman Munson headed to spring training for the Yankees
And as you mentioned - Payne Stewart coming off a US open victory - a three time major winner
There was NO ONE bigger in baseball than Clemente when he was tragically killed
Different era, different time

I was never a super fan of Kobe's as I hate the Lakers, but I did buy his first sneaker for Jr. High Basketball. Comes as quite a shock given his stature as one of the best basketball players of my generation. I was stunned when I saw the news.
The Yankees had a game against the Rangers one week before Munson died. I sat right behind home plate in old Arlington Stadium and could hear every word Munson said to the batters and vice versa. Hardly anyone was in the stands, so you could hear it all. What a shock to hear he was killed a week later! It was not heading to spring training, it was within the season.
Also, don't forget the great Otis Redding.

Lynard Skynard in 1977 on their way to Baton Rouge for a concert. My dad's college roommate still has his tickets for that concert.

Crazy PC at work. Weird considering the #MeToo movement.

’DISPLAYED POOR JUDGMENT’
WaPo reporter suspended for post-crash Kobe Bryant tweet
The Washington Post placed a political reporter on administrative leave over tweets she sent as news of Kobe Bryant’s tragic death were still unfolding.
The paper said the tweets "displayed poor judgment that undermined the work of her colleagues."
Post reporter Felicia Sonmez shared a 2016 story about 2003 rape allegations from The Daily Beast headlined, “Kobe Bryant’s Disturbing Rape Case: The DNA Evidence, the Accuser’s Story, and the Half-Confession,” as details of the helicopter crash were still trickling out.
Sonmez doubled down with numerous follow-up tweets when her initial message was hit with an onslaught of backlash, writing that the response was “eye-opening,” and claiming she received abuse and death threats.
another in bad taste, Dallas Morning News ran an article yesterday about what might have been had a Lakers/Mavs trade involving Kobe hadn't fallen through.
