    Houston Blanks @LATechSB

Houston took advantage of some miscues to score three unearned runs and Cougars pitcher McKenna Fryar tossed a two-hit shutout as the Cougars defeated Louisiana Tech 4-0 Friday evening.

The LA Tech softball team is 2-8 now. What a fall from grace. It's hard to believe they could get this bad this quickly after winning the CUSA title just last season.

This team can't hit. Their batting average is only .195 vs their opponents .309. That's pathetic. They are not even making it interesting. This is softball, not baseball. They are not exactly trying to hit against Justin Verlander out there.

Others on here will blame “injuries”, but if you really follow softball at all you know that good softball schools recruit two ways (Juco and Travel Ball). Competition is better and you can see what the athletes can do.

Recruiting “all-district” high school athletes who have never played competitive travel ball doesn’t always get results.

See what McNeese State is doing (currently a top 10 ranked recruit class in the country).

Jury is still out on Winn, but softball is won or lost in the off season.

Talent--Maybe that's why Coach MM left..besides the gigantic raise...they lost there best two pitchers plus their top hitters and leaders of the team...there talent level is nowhere near the totality of last year's team...and you have to have a stud pitcher or two, at least one, or you likely have no chance...cant explain the low BA, but just don't think this team has a ton of talent...looks like a total rebuild going into a new facility era...it remains to be seen if the new HC has what it takes...it took Mark about 4 years before he started really turning the ship...

Can't explain the lack of hitting. Although the team is without the top three hitters of a year ago, there's still quite a number of players who put up good numbers at the plate last year. Some of them are starting to come around.

Injuries did play a role early in the season. Lot of ladies playing out of their normal positions to fill in the gaps. I think most everyone is back now.

When you don't have a stud pitcher, you have to rely on your pitching at least keeping you close and use your offense to win. Obviously that's not working with the mediocre batting average.

Team is now 3-11. Three of the 11 losses are to Top 15 teams. And a tough Baylor team scheduled for today. First home game isn't until March 13, but they play at ULM tomorrow at 5PM. Conference play starts next week.

I think all our players played travel ball as well as high school. And we've had 2-3 juco transfers each year lately. Three on this year's team.

If you follow softball, there’s a difference between “travel ball” and serious “travel ball”

Look at the recruits and their travel ball teams again, then look at the travel ball teams that McNeese State is recruiting.

I think the bar this season is 20 wins. It’s a low bar, probably for good reason (no home field, new coach).

    Next year will be interesting.
