There is no other city in the US remotely like NYC. Had they not been the first major city with an outbreak, they probably would have done better. Much has been learned about treatment since the early days.

Recent study on the effect of mask mandate.

In Kansas, statewide mandate for masks was instituted but counties could opt out. Transmission was really high when the mandate was issued.

The counties that accepted the mandate saw reductions in COVID spread and counties that adopted the mandate saw reductions in cases over the next month (went from 17 cases per 100k populations to 16 cases) and saw dramatic increases in non-mandate counties (went from 6 cases per 100k to 12 cases, a 100% increase).

I do tours at Melrose, once or twice a week, and yesterday I had a young woman who...bless her heart...is so paranoid that she can scarcely function. One of my co-workers took me aside and whispered, "why the hell doesn't she just stay locked up in her Lysol-drenched house, then!?" I admit she was annoying to a point, but I was able to accommodate her such that she enjoyed the tour. She wore a mask and a face shield and held a disinfectant sprayer. "Can I spray the hand rail?" Sure!

Since the China virus is spread in droplets of water, or at least it can live longer in water than it can in the air, it makes sense to minimize the accidental "sharing" of "water" via spit, cough, or a sneeze. Masks can be aggravating...but then so too can the China virus. Choose your poison.

To prove that mask mandates work? Hard to devise a better experiment to test the hypothesis than one that happens in the same state at the same time.

Hundreds of bodies are still in storage at pandemic disaster morgue on Brooklyn waterfront.

The bodies of hundreds of people who died in New York City during the Covid-19 surge in the spring are still in storage in freezer trucks on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Many of the bodies are of people whose families can’t be located or can’t afford a proper burial, according to the city’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner. About 650 bodies are being stored in the trucks at a disaster morgue that was set up in April on the 39th Street Pier in Sunset Park.
