In theory, that is possible. All viruses mutate as part of their normal cycle(s). As a novel virus C-19 would have gone thru some rapid mutations early in its existence. But then such mutations are not radical departures from its original molecular make-up. Thus immunity can still be built up by those exposed to the early versions of the virus against exposure to later manifestations of it. YES! and it is also possible that such mutations can produce another strain whereby early exposure won't provide immunity. Anything is possible. Keep in mind that C-19 is really SARS II, mutated from SARS or some close relative to it, which is an offshoot of HIV. There is already herd immunity in the world against those older viruses. As this novel virus goes thru mutations it is very likely that it will be in a form, somewhere along its life cycle, that is defeated by said herd immunity present in all populations.

Now...the fear of the dreaded "Second wave" everyone is expecting to hit this fall...would be another mutated version of the virus. It can "hide" in some remote corners of the populace, biding its time. It is possible. That's exactly what the Spanish Flu did in August, 1918 and it spread because of the movement of hundreds of thousands of soldiers around the world, going home after the war. The second wave was a mutated strain of the first version, more deadly and highly contagious.

So...is it possible? Yes. But it is also possible the virus has already taken its best shot.

I never said it was a sole factor. The density, particularly through the frequency of the interactions in public transportation is a major factor for NYC.

Here was the segment on masks in full:

LaPook, March 8: There’s a lot of confusion among people, and misinformation, surrounding face masks. Can you discuss that?

Fauci: The masks are important for someone who’s infected to prevent them from infecting someone else… Right now in the United States, people should not be walking around with masks.

LaPook: You’re sure of it? Because people are listening really closely to this.

Fauci: …There’s no reason to be walking around with a mask. When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is. And, often, there are unintended consequences — people keep fiddling with the mask and they keep touching their face.

LaPook: And can you get some schmutz, sort of staying inside there?

Fauci: Of course, of course. But, when you think masks, you should think of health care providers needing them and people who are ill. The people who, when you look at the films of foreign countries and you see 85% of the people wearing masks — that’s fine, that’s fine. I’m not against it. If you want to do it, that’s fine.

LaPook: But it can lead to a shortage of masks?

Fauci: Exactly, that’s the point. It could lead to a shortage of masks for the people who really need it.

I could post tons of links to studies and analyses explaining the case for masks. The overwhelming evidence shows it can make a difference. It is ignorant and idiotic not to wear one.

Bottom line: if you REALLY want to reopen the economy and have it come back to where it was in January, you should wear a mask. This is how we can get it done.

I don’t think anyone knows for certain whether the European strain is more contagious or deadly. It is the version that is most dominant worldwide now, but then again Western cultures don’t do as well wearing masks.

Some interesting reading if Chinese are telling the truth.
It’s the China’s communist party and therefore their scientist can’t be believed.

How are the mass transit users doing with the mask wearing? Is the China Virus still growing in New York?

It looks like the NYPD is enforcing the requirement to wear masks on the subway.

According to the story they arrested her for the way she acted (striking an officer) not for the lack of a mask.

Funny, they made it mandatory, but they don't enforce it.

Why did they wait so long to make it mandatory if it is so important? (first week in May)

The line was getting flat without mandatory masks.

Are you being obstinate about the mask thing for any particular reason?

Why were the police talking to the woman in the first place? They don’t arrest people for not wearing masks, but you can get cited and fined.

Cuomo made it mandatory in mid April for areas where social distancing was not possible (such as subways). NYC was under a pretty strict lockdown at the time.

For weeks we've seen pictures of subway riders not wearing masks in New York. If the line is getting flat, but the main source of the China Virus in New York is mass transit...

If Cuomo made it mandatory in mid April the story you posted from May 14 got it wrong.

New Yorkers have to wear a face mask in public following an executive order passed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) last week.
