Will NCAA baseball quality improve in short run?

I don't follow college baseball all that closely, and there are a lot of factors here, but in the continued interest of BB&B having non-pawlitics threads going . . .

Do you baseball guys see NCAA level baseball getting a bump in talent across the board over the next couple of years? It looks like the incentives for going pro in the next draft will be really lowered, which will mean better high school players going to college and more college players sticking around. Plus, it's possible that this year's seniors could get another year of eligibility. I suppose there will be some trade off for not playing/practicing this spring/summer. None of the guys being recruited for next year's signing class will have any sr year scouting (not sure how much that matters for baseball).

    Thoughts?

Re: WIll NCAA baseball quality improve in short run?

I've thought about this as a selfish Tech Baseball fan.

-I think we had a guy or two who may have been drafted as juniors, but likely won't now.
-I think we have a couple of seniors who will help us even more than they were going into this current mess.
-I think the long term gain of all these guys getting an extra year year well certainly increase the quality of the game at this level.

It will be interesting to see if the NCAA makes an adjustment to the scholarship limit at least over the next 4 to 5 years.

So an extra year for srs, plus potentially a better an average crop of incoming freshmen (and fewer jrs going pro) - do y'all think the overall quality of play looks better on the field? It has to, right?

The answer is "yes". The quality of play for college baseball will be artificially inflated next year as most programs will be allowed to stack their teams with "extra year" seniors. It's probably unfair to the younger players, but in light of current circumstances I don't see a better solution.

Of course, this means there will probably be a deflated level of play 2 years from now, because the younger guys who lost playing time to "extra year" seniors in 2021 won't be developing as fast. There's no way this doesn't hurt the younger players.

Maybe we could have a Freshman/JV team that plays other local Freshman/JV/NAIA/D3/JUCO etc teams.

But that might be off-set by a shorter MLB draft leading to a better quality of younger players going to college that might otherwise have gone pro straight from high school.

Yes, with MLB changing the draft and sign process over the next 3 years the college game will improve, but until the NCAA changes the 11.7 scholarship limit there will simply be new problems that arise in college baseball. I can't imagine being a HC in 2021-22 trying to fit the puzzle together. MLB wants to push costs to NCAA and baseball programs and they are proving to get what they want with COVID-19. This is speeding up the process that they started last year with the PBA negotiations with MiLB. Many of my close friends and colleagues will be out of jobs and many communities will not have pro sports any longer as MiLB is what they have had. It will take pro opportunities away from college players as well as the draft will probably be 20 rounds and you will have as many as 30-42 few teams in MiLB (the Houston Astros plan). Just isn't growing the game it truly is shrinking the game and is bad for the entire sport of baseball. One other thing is you may see the season for college baseball pushed back a few weeks into the summer as well with the draft also being later in the year.

Good article - talks about how many coaches sign more players than their roster allows. Mostly with the expectation that a few upper classmen would go pro and also a few signees.

I think a Freshman/JV team would be a great place to house some of these players. There are plenty of teams in the area to play - BPCC, LSUS, Centenary, other JV teams.

Obviously the coaching limits would have to change to make this work. Then there's the budget for those salaries. I guess grad assistants could be used.

MLB sure doesn't look to have much interest in supporting MiLB these days. I hate that. MLBPA isn't going to fight for it either (its membership has already "made it").
