76 years ago.. Aug 6, 1945, First atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
This, and the Aug 9 bomb, saved millions of lives, and has saved millions since then too.
If you have the chance to read it there is a book that covers the planned invasion of the Jap mainland in 1945. Can't remember its name or the author. I haven't read it, but did read a summary of it and the projected casualties on both sides is staggering.
Japan had been training and preparing their citizens for it for months. The US would have had to kill a very large percentage of the population had they invaded, much higher than both bombs put together. Having said that, I’ve often wondered how the guy that dropped that bomb felt afterwards. Knowing that you killed that many people had to be a heavy burden to carry, even if in reality you saved 10x as many lives.
The fire bombing of Tokyo killed as many as the two atom bombs did combined...some reports say even more. But that was a fleet of B-29s dropping fire bombs over night March 9-10, 1945. And...the worst part is sources say the civilian deaths were, in most cases, totally horrific. No need for details...
War sucks.
"It is good that war is so terrible, else we might grow too fond of it." - General Robert E. Lee, while viewing the Union dead at Fredericksburg.
On this date...
As I watching the review of events on FOX this morning, the moment by moment recounting of that horrible day, my 5-yr-old granddaughter walks in and stops in front of the TV, pausing to watch. She says, "What's happening, Papa?" I told her this was 20 years ago, long before you were born. She continued to watch. She climbed into my lap and hug up close, tears in her eyes. I thought about removing her from the room, go watch her cartoons in her bedroom, but then I thought, no this is history, this is reality. She stayed with me...finally she stammered around, trying to find the words to ask me what happened. I did the best I could to explain it all without invoking any unnecessary fear in her.
I just experienced the horror of 9-11 again, this time through the eyes and feelings of a 5-year-old.
We must NOT ever forget!
