    2020 Season - Covid Edition

The California State University System announced yesterday that fall classes would be online-only. That affects 3 MWC teams - SDSU, Fresno St & SJSU. Our opener is UNLV, a MWC team.

I've seen articles (can't find right now) that MWC Commish said if any can't play, then all teams can't play.

My thoughts are there will be some sort of hybrid on-campus classes that will include student athletes and those 3 will play.

However, if UNLV couldn't play, I thought it would be interesting to see what teams might be available to start the season.

MWC FBS opponents Week 1: Arkansas, Mississippi State, C Michigan, Georgia Southern

A trip to Arkansas or State wouldn't be bad (especially if we pick up a million plus guarantee).

The Pac 12 has also hinted they may only play conference games - Alabama & TCU have had talks to play - both week 1 PAC 12 opponents.

Pac 12 FBS week 1 opponents: Oklahoma State, BYU, Michigan.

The above article talks about how Force Majeure could be used to get out of contracts with Vandy non-conference opponents if SEC went to a conference-only season. In my opinion, if SEC teams are allowed to play at all, then Force Majeure clause would be void.

The clause states that "In the event of fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, war, invasion, hostilities, rebellion, insurrection, confiscation by order of government, military or public authority or prohibitory or governmental authority, including that of the Southeastern Conference or National Collegiate Athletic Association, making it impossible or impractical to play the game, both Parties shall be relieved of any and all obligations of this agreement."

    Atlantic 10 -
    https://atlantic10.com/news/2020/5/1...p-formats.aspx

Decisions approved that will apply to only the 2020-21 season were to regionalize and condense conference schedules by 25 percent in the sports of field hockey, volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse. These revised schedules will allow for institutions to ensure a safer environment, minimize travel and missed class time, and conserve cost while still providing competitive schedules for the student-athletes and coaches. Additionally, the 2020-21 Atlantic 10 Championships for volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse were each reformatted to a four-team championship. This will minimize travel exposure, provide a final four competitive experience and allow for the championships to be conducted in one weekend.

We'll probably see something similar in C-USA

That would be the perfect conference for ODU. Three Atlantic 10 teams are already in Virginia (Richmond, VCU, George Mason), George Washington is across the river in DC, and Davidson is right next door in North Carolina. ODU could bus ride to at least half their conference games or more.

@PeteThamel: Sources: The NCAA Football Competition Committee will soon discuss the impact of fractured schedules. This includes whether FBS schools can play multiple FCS teams and they’ll count toward bowl eligibility. This came out on NCAA Oversight call with schedules likely in flux.

Bruce Feldman: SOURCE: Can confirm that MAC football coaches were told two weeks ago that teams will no longer stay in hotels the night before home games to cut costs. The MAC will also reduce the size of travel rosters from 76 to 70 for conference games. @NickPBlade first reported the move.

The Mid-American Conference is canceling postseason tournaments beginning in 2021 for multiple sports and changing the postseason format for men's and women's basketball.
The sports that will no longer have a postseason indefinitely are baseball, softball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's lacrosse and field hockey. A basketball postseason tournament will still be held but all first-round home games will be eliminated. Instead, the top eight teams from the regular season will automatically advance to Cleveland for second-round play at Quicken Loans Arena.
The changes go into effect starting with the 2021 season and will be in place for at least four years

Nah, I hear CUSA West will merge with the SEC West.

If we're gonna post an unending line of speculations, might as well shoot for the top.

We have to be getting close to hearing something. So many issues must be determined (I'd think) by the end of May. My guess for Tech, is that the UNLV deal will be scrapped and the money game payouts will be reduced for starters.
