    Re: New AD

I wonder if anyone has thought of a Dooley type setup, with Holtz being both AD and HC. Not saying it's a good idea, or a bad idea, but it is an idea and certainly not precedent setting at Tech. Dooley brought something special to the AD position, albeit with a lot of lieutenants working for him in the athletic department. Bump his salary up to $1 mil and turn him loose on the department.

Hopefully we don't go cheap or next man up.
Holtz was asked about it on a couple of radio interviews this week. He said he doesn't know what's going to happen down the line, but right now he has no interest.

See above. Unless something crazy happens, it's not going to be Holtz.

i posted this last spring in this thread. I think it would be a great idea, because no one in Ruston has more contacts or collateral in college athletics. He’s of an age where he could let go of some of the football duties to younger more aggressive assistants and with a good group of AD lieutenants he can build strong scheduling for the rest of the sports (let the bball coaches handle their own). He also has contacts in the AAC, where we need to be eventually. I think moving his salary to $1M would do it and he should be happy in Ruston for a long run.

I honestly don't think he cares enough about our overall program to be in the position. I don't think he would be driven by money unless it was BIG money.

Not sure the that the financial landscape in college athletics is going to be that great over the next few years, I would venture to guess there may not be a lot of movement with AD's and Coaches for a little while. That being said, The AD spot may become more attractive to HCSH and other candidates. As PD said, not sure Skip cares that much about our program, but if he did, I don't think you will find many with the kind of contacts and relationships Skip has.

With the impact of the Corona Crunch, there may be some Deputy AD's out of the P5 looking for jobs at some point after this season shakes out.

I could be wrong, but it seems like very different skill sets. Not sure that someone who enjoys one job would enjoy the other. Skip already makes enough money to live pretty high on the hog? Why invite the additional headache?

Both jobs at once is begging for balls to be dropped.

    Just say no to HC/AD.

Yes, this 1970s model just happen to fall in our lap with Dooley. He was not a good coach and was a bully as an AD. He was not well respected as a person when he left here.

Not to mention Skip doesn't seem to have as the biggest goal - to win conference championships. I appreciate the bowl wins and really enjoyed the game last night, but my wish is still conference championships, in all sports.

There is a reason literally no other school out of 130 allow the HC to be the AD as well. It is a bad idea. If DR thought it was a good idea we probably should do the opposite. I want someone with some experience and success at marketing, raising money, and improving attendance and game day experience. Someone with some skins on the wall or time paid at a big time, successful athletic department.

Money is gonna be even tighter, probably for years to come. Need someone who can function in the "do more with less" arena. Mostly, we need an AD who will focus on a return to gameday experience...when the China virus is gone...November 4th!...and work to get fans back into the stands. Relax some of the BS restrictions and make attending games easy and fun!

    MAGGA!

I find it hard to believe anyone would actually entertain the idea of Holtz as AD.

    Not no, but HELL NO!

The dude is an average HC at best. He tried to give away the win the other night by changing back to Allen.

But with the contacts and relationships that he has cultivated over the years this would be a bonanza for Tech. Power 5 schools would be begging to travel to Ruston to play us, across the board in all sports. Not to mention the AAC would be begging us to join their conference, maybe even the ACC or Big 12. The possibilities are endless. The folks at UCONN and USF just love him to death.

Plus, like others have said, we could pay him a million a year. This would all but assure he would never leave, but we could still give him a $100,000 raise every year to keep he poachers away.

It is amazing we have been able to hang on to a coach with such great connections. It has been so beneficial in scheduling great teams to come to Ruston to play. Just imagine the schedules of teams coming to play here in the future with Skip in charge of scheduling. Just with Lou's former employers we could have Notre Dame, South Carolina, Minnesota, Arkansas and NC State all visit the Joe.

Rockstars all the way around. Championship banners abound. We just beat Southern Miss. We could probably beat South Alabama too. We are idiots if we don't give Skip the job! Who cares if he wants the job or not?
