Only punted twice last year and averaged 28. He averages 36.1 this year.
He was signed as a punter I believe. But he’s a good FG kicker. Im not sure if Holtz is just trying to make do this year or if he’s hoping Barnes gets better. But Barnes does not need to be covering a majority of all kicking type duties.
There’s a very good point in this. If they (whoever) rough our punter, not that there’s any need to since as a whole our offense is little threat to move the ball and score, but if they hurt him then we’ve lost our biggest scoring opportunity in kicking those field goals that Holtz loves so much. You’d think the way Holtz coaches a game that field goals are worth 10 points.
I can’t disagree. I’ve never seen such a simplistic offense run so repeatedly. It would be somewhat tolerable if we had the sort of athletic advantage and execution perfection to make it work like Lombardi’s Packers did with their power sweep, but we don’t. 5 or 6 very fundamental plays run over and over Without any misdirection or option alternatives just won’t get it done.
Holtz’s recipe for winning isn’t working anymore, nor should it. Where he once depended on the other team playing bad enough to lose, now it’s him doing that and he’s doing it pretty much singlehandedly.
Haven't you heard?
We had to cancel spring football practice. We couldn't work out this summer. Holtz never saw the starting QB throw a pass in person until 6 weeks ago. We have ten new starters on defense. We have a new DC. We have a new OC. There is a virus going around called Covid-19. Our starting LT decided to opt out. Our starting LT entered the transfer portal. Our starting LT transferred to Michigan. Also, it's frustrating. And don't forget-we are a work in progress but there is NO PROGRESS. Our starting QB is still learning the offense. Our starting QB is not comfortable in the system yet with all the checks and audibles. Our starting QB is confused by the blitz and defensive adjustments. That should explain it!
The last I read we were allowed 85 scholarships... I have not seen 85 athletes on the field as yet, why couldn't we invest one in a real punter?
What happened to Farlow? Did he graduate? He at least kicked some 50 yarders last year, if not for a great average (although I would hope better than 36.1 yds.).
Duly noted. But thank goodness, we're the ONLY program in America with those kind of problems. We're just very fortunate that no other football program in America is having to deal with COVID, new starters on defense, new QB's on offense, OL woes and transfer portal issues.
Had Farlow been hurt to where they dont want to risk him hitting the field too much?
Very odd. Maybe he’s being punished for something.
I don't know if we should change punters...it could get worse .
