    SI realignment

    https://www.si.com/college/2020/06/2...ce-realignment

Tech would be in the new Sun Belt Conference, with LSU, Bama, Auburn...and USM and Tulane. Of course this won't happen...no way! But at least two of the worst football programs UTEP and ULM are kicked out of the upper level. Damn uteppers with their smug BS when they got the CUSA invite over us....hah! And no need to even discuss the Junior College War Chickens...

And just for kicks, looking at the proposed new alignments, the Sun Belt would be the strongest, with 6 SEC schools in it, and the Tech Dawgs too, of course! And the Rocky Mountain league the weakest, with probably Boazy State, the two Arizona schools, CU and Utah being the strongest, but not much there overall, in terms of national power. And Clemson lands in another cakewalk conference.

A reshuffle would make college football more interesting.

Should have added one more conference and some FCS teams to get to 132 and simply do a 16 team playoff with 11 auto-ins and 5 at large selections. This has always been the holy grail of CFB playoffs as far as I am concerned. Scheduling would need to happen at the NCAA level and the season would need to be reduced to allow for the playoffs.

I wish we could get a rigid system of promotion and relegation in college football. Every game would actually matter even teams at the bottom of the conference as they don't want to be relegated. Any team could earn their way to the top.

No need to reduce the season as every team would have 12 regular season games.

The 12-team playoff in this system eliminates conference championship games. The first round would be on the current conference championship weekend with the quarterfinals the following week. The semifinals and finals would be similar to the current system.

Wouldn't really be that hard in this proposed system. Set up 10 FCS conferences aligned with the 10 FBS conferences. Use a 2-year cumulative ranking where the lowest team in each FBS conference is relegated and the top team in the corresponding FCS conference is promoted.

Even more spice could be added if the second lowest FBS conference teams had to play the second highest FCS conference teams to stay in FBS.

    Yes, I agree.

Promotion/relegation is more complex at the college level because conference affiliations are not only mostly shared between sports but also bleed over into academics. It can work in a pro league because there are no associated acts.

It's about as cheesy as you would expect a movie with that title, but it's Sam Elliot and it's a fun watch at least.

    Re: SI realignment

What I would REALLY love to see is 144 teams in 12 conferences. I would like to see a Tier A and then a Tier B. Call them P6 and G6 if you like.

All 12 conference champions make the playoffs. 4 at large teams make the playoffs from the Tier A list.

THEN every 4 years, based on the rolling 4 year performance of programs (playoff appearances, playoff wins etc. having higher weight and then W-L and other sane tiebreakers) the Top 2 teams from Tier B conferences are swapped with the bottom 2 teams of the Tier A conferences with a specific regional tie between each Tier A and Tier B conference.

Obviously it would never happen but in my mind it would make college football MUCH more interesting.

There's been some talk, here, and on other boards, about the tier system and schools being promoted/demoted based on performance over a few seasons. The English Professional Soccer League(s) does that. Toward the end of regular seasons even those teams out of playoff contention still have a lot to play for, one could argue, have even more to play for given the prestige and money difference between the upper and lower tiers. Keeps things very interesting, might have a bottom dweller playing a playoff contender in the final weeks of the season and both sides are very motivated to play their best trying to win. Back about 20 years ago one of the better clubs, Arsenal....or maybe I'm thinking of Aston Villa...anyway, one of them got relegated to the lower tier, OMG! Their fans went nuts calling for heads to roll. Would be like say, Arkansas or some other struggling SEC school, being kicked down to the lower tier...whoa!

Which is precisely why this will never happen. Even though it would make every game matter more and excite lots more fans.
