    Ross Harper

I haven’t seen this posted elsewhere. I saw that Ross Harper passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

When I was fresh out of college we went to watch the Kansas game in Lawrence. We got to meet Ross and his wife and tour his RV. Great guy.

    He’ll be missed.

    Re: Ross Harper

From the Ruston Leader - August, 2004 about our friend Techsasdawg:

    Couple lives for Tech football

    By Chuck Cannon
    Editor

They might not be the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs' biggest fans, but it's hard to imagine anyone being bigger.

Ross and Betty Harper arrive at the parking lot of Joe Aillet Stadium on the Louisiana Tech campus a few days before each Bulldog home game in their Monaco RV and immediately ask what they can do to help get things ready before kickoff.

Thursday afternoon, Ross — Louisiana Tech Class of 1964 — was in Aillet Stadium, helping place the backs on reserve seating.

Betty — Class of 1963 — says they often help run the Athletic Store on the days leading up to the game.

"We just do whatever we can to help out," Betty said.

That includes cheering for the 'Dogs — at home and away.

"We follow them pretty much every where they go," Ross said.

This year the Harpers will attend every game but two — trips to Miami and Boise State.

"The Miami and Tennessee games are too close together to get to both of them, and Boise and little far to drive," Ross said. "But we are going to Hawaii."

Ross said he looked at getting a paddle wheel for his RV, "but I think I would have a leak problem, so we'll just fly to Hawaii."

Ross retired from a Washington-based think tank in 1994. The couple bought their RV in 1995 and have used it as their home since then, traveling across the United States and attending Louisiana Tech football games.

"During the winter months we stay at the Fun and Sun RV Park in San Benito, Texas," Betty said. "We come here for the spring game, then we begin traveling."

The Harpers have a two daughters — one in California and one in Virginia — so a lot of their travel time is spent going back and forth between the east and west coasts.

"Very seldom do we plan where we'll stop," Ross said. "We get up about 8, leave by 10, and by 2 or 3 we're looking for a play to stay," Ross said. "We've spent the night in all 48 states in our camper."

The two Ruston natives have ties other than Louisiana Tech to this area. Ross' dad was the Rev. Jolly Harper, while Betty's parents — "Pop" and T.T. Darby — ran a local funeral home.

"My dad was kidnapped and knocked unconscious by Bonnie and Clyde," Betty said. "When they (Bonnie and Clyde) we killed, dad had to identify the body and embalm them."

While in town for the ball games, the Harpers catch on visits with old friends.

"We know a lot of people here," Betty said. "We'll go tailgate with others before the game, then afterward we get them at our place."

The Harpers also open up their "home" to players.

"Ryan Moats stopped by yesterday (Wednesday)," Betty said. "He's a nice young man. All of the guys know they can stop by when ever they want."

The Harpers will occupy by their current "address" for about two weeks since the Bulldogs have back-to-back home games. Then its off to Tennessee.

"We'll miss the Miami game, but we'll be at Tennessee the following week," Ross said. "When ever we can, we'll be there to support our boys."

Thanks for letting us know. I had not seen him in years. Didn't know he was suffering from that horrible disease. He was a true fan and part of the grass roots effort that I believe made the difference in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Very sorry to hear about the passing of Ross Harper. He was definitely one of the good guys, and had over 2,200 posts here on B&B. He and his wife Betty were HUGE LA Tech fans! I hope Ross has a seat on the 50-yd line in heaven. RIP, Ross!

He had his RV open for any Tech fan to visit, and use, at Tulsa when we won the WAC, 19-7 over Tulsa that day. That was....2001, I believe.
