A new article has been posted on www.latechsports.com:

Luke Anthony threw five touchdowns and ran for another to lead Louisiana Tech to a 66-38 win over Houston Baptist Saturday night before a "Covid19 sellout" of 7,140 fans at Joe Aillet Stadium.

    "Covid19 sellout" is catchy.

Some of you who were there...how was the fan participation?

    - Looked like the students bunched up and looked like more than 1000 were able to get tickets.
    - Did anybody dare tailgate during the 3 hours from entry of parking area to kickoff.
    - I've seen crowds announced larger, but that looked smaller on TV.
    - Did you practice distancing in the SEZ and Press box area?
    - How did the "wear your mask" rule work out? Anybody get escorted out?

The band was spread out (6 ft+) and playing while masked, filling the upper east between the 25 yard lines. Brought nice energy. Crowd noise used to drown them out on OO, good to hear them so well.

In N-O-P I'd guess 1 in 3 at very most wore a mask during the game. Students were definitely bunched, lots of shoulder to shoulder. They were smiling, enjoying being at the game. Concessions were a breeze. It was pretty much a normal game for us. I do miss the NOISE that 15-20K make. A good evening!

Just for the record.....I keep hearing people say they were "disappointed" in our defense last night. I'm not. Simply put, most Tech fans are not giving Baily Zappee and the HBU offense the respect they deserve. Zappee has already passed for more than 9,600 yards in his career. And if they were to play a 10-game schedule in 2020 (not likely due to COVID), Zappee would likely finish his career with more than 13,000 passing yards. That's rare air. For comparison purposes, Tim Ratty finished his college career with 12,746 career passing yards in college.

Last note: LA Tech beat HBU by a wider margin last night than either UNT or Texas Tech did. Our defense played well and deserves props for making great adjustments last night.

We played HBU’s game and won by 28. We didn’t rush the ball and control the clock, we just scored. Could we have? Probably. And both teams would have scored less as a result. But the margin would have likely been similar.

Once we got up 28 their offense was playing a catchup game that their defense was not capable of sustaining. If we had not switched out QBs for two drives in the first half, it would have probably been 52-17 at the end, if they even would have gotten the 17.

Clarify: “End” as in end of the half.

Tyler Grubbs played at Holy Cross in New Orleans. The Catholic League (5A), one of the best, and usually top to bottom THE best district in Louisiana. I hope Tech can continue to sign kids out of that district. Of course, it's tough since players are literally national recruits. Rummel's all-everything MVP, Donovan Kaufmann, signed with Vandy. He's a very bright and ambitious young man, seeking a chance to play CFB and earn a valuable degree. He'll do both. But...woulda been nice to have him in Ruston.

He practically won the state championship game on his own.
