Not so much Vandy was "allowed" to stay. Vandy, unlike Tulane, stayed because they wanted to stay.
I assume it would take all the presidents of each institution in the SEC to vote to kick them out. Doubt anyone will or want to take the lead on that.
Regarding money, they got lots of it in the SEC. Vandy got a fat ass wallet.

We beat two teams who finished with losing records, a team playing with their third string QB, a team coached by a member of the student body, a team from the SBC and a Hawaii team who lost 6 games. Not exactly murders row. Not sure who Iowa or Iowa State played in their last six bowl games, but I beat they didn't have it that easy. And, I am sure Iowa and Iowa State would have faired pretty good against our lineup, as well as dozens of other teams.
Navy was the team I am thinking that played with a third string QB. Miami wasn't very good last year, they were one of the 2 teams with a losing record. Manny was on the hot seat after just one season, losing to CUSA teams in one season will do that to a Power 5 coach, especially one in Florida. Ironically you mention their Miami's QB play, this year with a transfer QB and they are 3-0 and ranked in the Top 10. What a difference a year and a new QB make, huh? Of course, this great year two turnaround is likely to have a set-back this Saturday against Clemson.
Navy played, 95% of the game, with their back-up QB. Their 3rd stringer played exactly ONE play...that 45 yard TD run to tie the game with 4+ mins to go. He came in for that one play because the 2nd stringer had just gotten shaken up and had to leave the field. That 3rd stringer, just completed his tenure as a 3-year starter in 2019.
Navy was ranked...3 weeks before the season ended. LOL
Miami didn't have a "losing record" until LA Tech GAVE THEM ONE! The Canes came into the Indy Bowl game with a 6-6 record, including wins over Louisville, FLA St, Pittsburgh and Virginia in conference. And by the way, the fewest points Miami scored all year in any single game in 2019 was 16, which they scored in their win over Pitt. Miami also had an OT loss to GA Tech, and very close losses to Florida (24-20) and Mac Brown's North Carolina (28-25).
It's funny....and sad... nobody thought Miami was awful until LA Tech shut them out in the Indy Bowl. Then suddenly, people like you want to degrade the Tech win by saying "well, Miami wasn't very good last year". To hell they weren't! Miami STILL had twice as many players drafted (4) into the NFL in April 2020, as LA Tech (2) did. And I would argue the Hurricanes also had higher recruited talent at every single position in 2019, and they probably had that kind of talent 3 players deep at every position on their roster.
The U, playing in Shreveport the day after Christmas with four future NFL draftees skipping the game, was an easy bet. It made no sense that all those cool guys attending school in Maimi, would be fired up to play a game in a city and stadium that are the complete opposite of their world. It was an easy bet for me. I am glad we won, but its no big deal.
