The LHSAA had to make a decision whether to either vacate the championship altogether or award the championship to the runner-up. I am assuming that is why Byrd is now getting the trophy.
That's what happened in 2005 when Bastrop was made to vacate the Class 4A title and the runner-up Breaux Bridge was awarded the championship. So there was a precedent.
Whatever Catholic High did it was bad enough to where they didn't want it made public.
Carson Bruno's interception that sealed Byrd's semi-final win over John Curtis turned out to be for a state championship.

I hate to send yall to Tiger Droppings but the scoop is over there ...
In particular, the LHSAA focused on alleged improper recruiting of players by the school.
Documents provided by a source to WAFB-TV show instances of Catholic High staff being instructed to scout specific middle school teams and youth organizations for potential recruits
BTW, it shocks me every year when I talk to parents and coaches alike about recruiting. The LHSAA handbook has an entire section on recruiting. The long and short of it is that it is illegal. Period. In every way.
In the age of cell phones and the Internet it is much harder to get away with now. Yay!
Still, that said, Catholic High's advantage isn't cheating. It is having a nine parish footprint and tremendous resources. There are plenty of life lessons in that disparity and quite frankly there are lots of mediocre teams putting in their best efforts trying to win, or win a district title, or beat a rival etc. that will learn amazing things about what it takes to succeed in a real world where almost everyone starts with no resources and no footprint.
How does a private school "illegally recruit"? It's a private school, if they want to recruit good football players then that's their business and no one else's. If they can get some kid from Texas, who will live with a host family for 4 years, and he is a kick-ass, sure fire Division I 5-star (and NFL) talent then great, more power to them. I would hope Rummel would do the same thing then. And probably would have to just to try to keep up. Catholic-BR has a terrific football program. It is a winning machine. I have seen them play in person enough to know they have kids standing along the sidelines who would be starters and stars at most public schools.
The whiny-ass public schools got their wish to not have to try to beat a team like Catholic-BR with the separate playoff system.
Catholic is the 2020 Division I State Champion...and 2021 champ too. Earn it on the field....or STFU!

Except recruiting is expressly forbidden by LHSAA rules.
2.1 RECRUITING VIOLATIONS2.1.1 Recruitment of students or attempted recruiting of students for athletic purposes, regardless of their residence, is a gross violation of the spirit and philosophy of these Bylaws and is expressly prohibited.2.1.2 “Athletic recruiting” is defined as the use of undue influence and/or special inducement by anyone connected directly or indirectly with an LHSAA school in an attempt to encourage, induce, pressure, urge or entice a prospective student of any age to transfer to or retain a student at a school for the purpose of participating in interscholastic athletics.
Again, the public schools distanced themselves from the private schools and the LHSAA allowed it to happen. In fact, made it happen. Why should a private school give a rat's azz what the LHSAA thinks? Private and public schools are separated, isolated, so it is way past time for the privates to stop paying dues to that crooked organization and form our own alliance.
With the exception of the Catholic league in the New Orleans area, public and private schools compete against each other in the regular season for district titles and playoff seeding.
So until they break away (which isn't going to happen) Catholic High is part of the LHSAA and must abide by its rules.
Also, there will be a vote in late January for the 5A schools to end the split. And that's all about money.
The 5-year projections show the Superdome being unaffordable to host any championships at any level. The LHSAA needs the split to end and to drive revenues back to where they were 15 years ago.
