    Hurricane Delta

Another thing to watch for this coming weekend....

Current projected track on yet-to-form Hurricane Delta has it just moving inland around New Orleans Friday evening. Peak intensity before landfall is shown at 105 mph.

Tropical Storm Gamma is forecast to get out of the way and eventually move into the western Yucatan Peninsula after Delta passes to the northeast.

It better not interfere with the Taco Tailgate we've got planned for UTEP!

Today's forecast has the storm moving inland before noon Friday near Morgan City with around 100 mph winds and moving just west of New Orleans Friday afternoon. It is forecast to be near Meridian by Saturday morning.

    Re: Hurricane Delta

Storm upgraded to hurricane status earlier than was expected. Evening forecast puts the track much slower but still with landfall around Morgan City now on Friday night and passing just west of New Orleans by daybreak Saturday. Winds at landfall still forecast around 100 mph. Peak intensity is forecast at 120 mph entering and moving into the central Gulf tomorrow night through Thursday.

Worse news is slower movement has the tropical storm north of Meridian Saturday night, so wraparound rain if any may not move out as fast as we might like.

This thing has slowed down enough to where it won't make landfall until Saturday morning.

It's a little early to know how our game might be impacted. I think the ULL-Coastal Carolina game will certainly be impacted.

I don't think Coastal Carolina is going to get on a charter if any part of Louisiana is under Hurricane warning when they land on Friday afternoon.

Especially not when Morgan City still looks to be in the bulls-eye for landfall with winds of 100-125 mph.

And the forecast track is now over Baton Rouge at about 8:00 Saturday morning with winds still at hurricane strength. The Missouri-LSU game scheduled at 8:00 PM could also be in doubt.

New data came in from the hurricane hunter, and they don't sit on it until the next advisory time like they did years ago.

1:00 update increased the winds from 130 to 140. Very small hurricane so far with hurricane force winds only out 20 miles from the center.

Signifcant westward move in the forecast on the 4:00 advisory. Landfall now expected around Vermillion Bay overnight Friday into Saturday. The 2:00 PM Saturday position is forecast near Vicksburg with 65 mph winds.

This thing isn’t playing around. From a TD to a Cat 4 in 30 hours and change.

    Re: Hurricane Delta

Guess it was predictable that the forecast track shifted back to the east on the 10:00 advisory. Landfall predicted a few hours earlier but still around Vermillion Bay Friday night with winds close to 125 mph.

The bad news is that the storm is now expected to slow down and only be just north of Jackson at 7:00 PM Saturday. We will have to see if that is far enough away on the west side to avoid rain in Ruston Saturday night.

I predict only a little breezy with a light rain at JAS Saturday.

Depending on exactly what Delta does, it is possible Ruston could see short, intense periods of heavy rain and wind. The outer bands of a hurricane sweeping around in its counter-clockwise motion can be fairly powerful, and can also spawn tornados. These bands, west of the eye, typically are narrow so they will pass any given point in 20-30 minutes and then be gone.

But, if Delta slides further east after landfall, Ruston could be spared the bands, and might just experience atmospheric disturbances which can create isolated showers and a breeze.
