It's a shame that our "2nd string" tackles are so bad that they literally act like matadors to opposing defenses. They should be ashamed of themselves as football players.

With that said, I believe Skip Holtz needs to run a completely different offensive formation this week. What we are doing is NOT working. Why keep running the same offensive sets when it's so easy for the opposing defense to disrupt everything?

For example, instead of running a 4 WR set with 1 RB --which is our primary offensive set-- CHANGE THINGS! Bring in a TE, and/or a second RB --or a slotback-- to help with pass protection and run support up front. It will provide better blocking and also give us more creative options with RB & TE screens, shovel passes, etc.... It should also end much of the double-teaming we see on our WR's, as the DB's move closer to the line of scrimmage. .

Sometimes we run a "straight T" formation, and it is very successful. But we didn't see THAT last night at all.

    How about a little coaching?

What is certain, is the fact that LA Tech can't keep doing the same thing and expect to get a different result. It's time to CHANGE what we are doing offensively at LA Tech.

It's time for Tech fans to stop blaming all our shortcomings on the "two missing tackles". Instead, we should act like a big boy team and ADJUST! That's why we pay the coaches.
Yes, call it the LaTech offensive for one. I think that’d help things.

I won’t touch your RB rating right now, but good call on the rest.

I wouldn’t mind henderson in the backfield in a single back under center Ace formation. We can’t just spread it out 4 wide and let Anthony roll out every play. It stretches things out too wide and creates bad passing angles. It takes away our over the middle passing game. Can we use a TE here and there? Kam McKnight is the only person recently that even resembles a TE... and we still didn’t use him to his potential.
    Good post.

Kam was a bad dude. Didn’t we use him a lot in wishbone on goal-to-go? That needs a reboot.

This or a tunnel screen should have been every other play on Saturday until they backed up a bit. Wasn't it a tunnel screen on 3rd and 16 to Hardy that we converted on our scoring drive in the 4th?

If we're not going to change from our 3 and 4 WR sets this week, I agree, it needs to be far more frequent. But with a week to plan, surely we can come up with some creativity to slow down the pass rush?

Surely Holtz can see that running 4wide and empty sets with a depleted Oline is a bad idea? Any decent team will get good pressure with 4 lineman.

Re: What's Your Suggestions for LA Tech Offense?

That’s actually a fairly complicated question to answer since we the fans aren’t at practice, don’t really know whose actually playing and what the players individual capabilities are. I would say this thought that depending on what the lineman can pull off in their positions whether it’s straight ahead blocking, cut blocks, pulling etc, Holtz should run a certain number of plays per lineman to capitalize on what they can actually do. As for the running backs it’s more a matter of attitude and determination over whatever the play is. Only play the guys who will run to the hole, hit it with determination and run head long over the first tackler. That should be good for 4-5 yards per run. Running easy to the line then stutter-stepping isn’t going to work! We’ve got plenty of quality receivers so all we need to do is commit to throwing the ball quickly and crisply then let out athletes get the yards after the catch. Unless things materialize in the course of the game I wouldn’t be trying to throw deep unless it’s a wide side, right side rollout. I don’t think any of our QBs can throw strongly moving to their left. QB wise, I think Anthony shows more confidence and has the better overall skills. I get the sense based on Holtz’s pass play calling that he has more confidence in Anthony’s execution of our passing offense. As bad as our O line has played the last two games not even a great QB could’ve accomplished much so that’s where the greatest changes and improvements have to happen first. Get these O line football players to play the game they’ve been playing since they were 8 years old. If Tech hasn’t recruited people capable of playing the game to even just the most fundamental level then we’re basically back to needing better coaches.

Long-term: bring back the uptempo spread offense. Holtz, you said you were gonna keep the style of play hence the hiring of OC Tony Peterson when you were hired.

Short-term: we got to be creative. Give the best players more chances for touches, Wilddawg (Wildcat) to Smoke.

A lot is dependent on the OL. There were many times in the past few games, I've seen our guys not block a single dude or get layed out on his back.

1:56:56 - UTEP rush 3 and got to Allen in the backfield. #76 Biron Rossell just sat there and blocked no one, letting a DE just run by him. Rewatching the game, Rossell had a terrible day.

Unless Holtz has a better OL somewhere we don't know about, there is not much you can do with this offense. Some of those OL men were not even trying to block on Saturday. You could try more pull blocking and rotate the passer out, but Anthony doesn't rotate well and Allen doesn't pass well. So you are stuck.

Stick with the good RB and quit trying to play platoon your guy in the backfield. (Watching the video of Holtz calling Boston Scott before the game reminded me of that whole RB1/RB2 mistake).

That was just horrible. Anybody that bad, should lose their scholarship. And no, I'm not kidding. We could go across the street and recruit some sorority girls who can block better than that.

Do whatever you've got to do to protect the QB. Even if you have 5 receivers open, the QB getting sacked in 1.5 seconds is not going to help. I like the idea of using a TE for blocking. Get Griffin Hebert more involved in the passing game.

It was his first game back after being injured at Marshall last year. And he had to sit for over two weeks until just a day or two before the game Saturday due to virus issues. A full week of practice should do him and several others lots of good.

Campbell is scheduled to be back unless something happens this week. No word on Lewis on the radio show Monday night.

To add to this, Skip said on the radio this morning that Rossell had gone through 2 foot surgeries after the injury a year ago. He was working his way back before having to sit for weeks because of covid. Hankinson also had to sit for 21 days because of covid and was cleared at the end of last week.

Skip apparently went to them on Friday night and asked them if they could go.

Both of them gave it everything they could.

On this play, he watched the DE rush 5 yards in before even laying a hand on him to block. It was too late and Anthony got sacked because of #76 Rossell. Call it rusty, lack of practice, or whatever...he made some bad mistakes by purely not blocking.

Queued up the video to that spot...
