Trump wants to bailout the airlines, more PPP and stimulus checks with his signature on it.
Pelosi wants to also include funding for unemployment insurance, money for schools and state and local governments, additional amounts for the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit (on the theory that it is even more expensive to deal with child care of returning to work in the pandemic).
Even though the Democrat plan is more expensive, it seems to get more at the heart of what is needed.
PPP has already served its purpose, additional payroll support is less helpful now. Additional stimulus checks is not necessarily a bad idea, but it is kind of a blunt instrument that isn’t very focused on the pain points. The support for states really is important, as is the support for those that are actually unemployed (so they can continue to pay rent and not cause spillover impacts and a double dip recession), and to keep teachers, hospitals and your LEO’s from losing their critical financial support. The extra child care support also seems sensible, but maybe that is something the Dems should give up to make close the 400 billion gap between the two proposals.

Trump says he wants $2000 checks, so do the Dems. It is now the House that won’t agree to it.
Of course, if Trump wanted this, he probably should have told his team that was negotiating it on his behalf (as well as the Republicans), so it wouldn’t wreck the heavily negotiated final bill.

What I said was 100 percent correct. This is the deal Mnuchin negotiated as Trump’s representative. The Dems were willing to amend the bill to increase the checks to 2k by unanimous consent (the mechanism available to amend the bill at this stage). The house GOP rejected it today. Those are the facts.
I have negotiated against people who like to come in at the 11th hour against the deadline and renegotiate the deal. It is a low talent negotiation tactic that only works when you know the other side is far more desperate for the deal than you. It means that either he knows he care less about Americans than Congress (probably true) and/or he is calculating that he either has no reputation for honest dealing or no longer needs it (probably also true).
And if there were any doubt about where Trump’s heart is on actually being engaged, he resolved that by playing golf today...
