Besides, they are trying to take down the disinformation that is being used to radicalize Trumpers and the those that are playing with matches. The same deplorables that planned and carried out this attack on the Capitol are planning a second attack on the Capitol and at state capitols. It is the responsible thing to do in this environment.
I do think they've brought some of this wrath down on themselves by positing themselves as a public square. But they haven't ever really been that.
They don't owe anyone a platform.

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Censorship: Time to ‘Put Wokeism to Sleep
Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Monday criticized censorship by media and Big Tech, calling for “wokeism” to be put to sleep, during a speech he gave at a Voice of America-hosted event.
In his opening remarks, Pompeo noted that some employees of VOA, a U.S. government-funded international news service, did not want him to speak at the event and called that “censorial instinct” dangerous.
“I read that some VOA employees didn’t want me to speak here today. I’m sure it was only a handful. They didn’t want the voice of American diplomacy to be broadcast on the Voice of America. Think about that for just a moment,” he said.
“This kind of censorial instinct is dangerous. It’s morally wrong. Indeed, it’s against your statutory mandate here at VOA. Censorship, wokeness, political correctness. It all points in one direction — authoritarianism cloaked as moral righteousness,” he said.
He then compared it to censorship by Big Tech.
“Similar to what we’re seeing at Twitter and Facebook and Apple and on too many university campuses today. It’s not who we are. It’s not who we are as Americans. And it’s not what the Voice of America should be. It’s time that we simply put woke-ism to sleep,” he said.
Although Pompeo did not explicitly mention it, on Friday Twitter and Facebook moved to permanently ban President Donald Trump from using their platforms. Then, on Saturday, Apple dropped Parler from its store and Amazon dropped Parler from using its hosting service.
Pompeo has defended the president and the administration, while some Trump administration officials have resigned or criticized the president after some of his supporters broke into the Capitol building and engaged in violence.
Democrats and some Republicans are accusing the president of inciting violence at the Capitol and are calling for his resignation, his impeachment, or for his cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment.

I don't think Twitter is in the First Amendment. It's not the government.
I’m not but they are. You are in total biased denial my good friend. They need to be busted up as they are gigantic monopolies that are socialist/commie run and not good for the country or the world as structured now.
And yes friends have arguments.
No matter if I think it is fair or not, I feel like these Tech giants probably can legally do what they want as far as this topic is concerned. The best thing we can all do is unplug from social media as I have done from all but BBB. I’m not far from another 8-9 month hiatus from here too. Real life is so much better.
Amen to ditching the Big Brother Watching (actually “little girl sister watching” socialistic media outlets, forums and companies as they're afraid of the truth and power of conservative ideology.
There are a million reasons to disconnect from Facebook or Twitter. But there really shouldn't be any legal problem here. I'm not sure why there would be.
It isn't a 1st amendment right for your local paper to refuse to publish your op-ed. Or even to refuse to run your classified ad. They don't owe you anything.
That’s what I’m beginning to understand. The issue isn’t publisher vs. platform. The issue is, and almost always is, money. Enough people cut them off, they go away.
I am opening a restaurant and since I don't want to spend money on all those handicap-accessible items, I'm not. I don't owe the handicap a meal. They can go somewhere else.
And you can’t kick me out when I come in and yell profanities around your other customers.
Is that your attempt to make a point? There are "disturbing the peace" ordinances and the police can be called to haul you away for said violation.
These monopoly social media giants are more obligated to provide services than a single eating establishment, one of many, many, such places. Let's do away with ALL regulations on private businesses. They shouldn't have to serve anyone and it's none of your business who they choose to accommodate and those they don't. Of course, as you've already guessed, that would include race, gender, sexual preference, age, family status, religion, non-religion (no effing atheists allowed!), and etc... and, why not! What's good for a few media giants is good for everyone else. Right?
