Rating services rate classes based on 20 signees according to what Ben Carlisle said on BTB Radio the other night. A class of 9 is going to be rated lower than a class of 16 or 20. That's just the way it is.

Looking at it another way, 16 3-stars is more stars total (48) than 9 5-stars (45).

But I don't waste time with recruiting. Stars don't matter to me. Wins are what matter to me.

FWIW, Skippy is to be on The Sports Company at 4:00 today.

Stars are important overall but at our level there are too many holes in the system to mean much. This year's recruiting cycle is going to be weird for obvious reasons for everyone. This was written back in October but I think is being born out.

It's hard. Not much left after cutting away the coachspeak.

From what i have read, the 85 scholarship is staying put. Only 2020 seniors are exempt from the 85 limit. So we didn’t have a lot of room to fill with HS players and take advantage of the large amount of transfers this year.

Here's what this CBSSports article says. It says the 85 man scholarship limit "is expanded " in 2021-22.

    https://www.cbssports.com/college-fo...f-eligibility/

But even with temporarily-expanded scholarship limits, athletic departments dealing with significant budget shortfalls may not be in position to spend more on athletic scholarships.
I interpret that to mean you can have a roster of 85 players, PLUS the players who were seniors in 2020. In other words, if you had 15 seniors in fall of 2020, you can have a total of 100 players on your roster for 2021, as long as 15 of those 100 players were 2020 seniors.

Also, the article begins with the following:

The NCAA Board of Governors took a landmark step on Friday by approving a measure that will grant an extra year of eligibility to all fall sports athletes. Even athletes who compete this fall will be eligible for an extra year under the rule,
Again, I interpret that to mean that all 2020 freshman players --like Tyler Grubbs-- will still have 4 MORE years of eligibility remaining to play college football. The 2020 sophomores will still have 3 yrs remaining (counting 2021), and so on.....

I believe LA Tech is only backfilling (replacing) non-returning seniors and other non-returning players that have left the program. Tech has chosen to stay under the 85-man roster limit, and include their returning 2020 seniors in that limit. So, while many FBS schools will have 90 to 110 or players on their roster for 2021, Tech has chosen to stay under the 85 maximum. That's why we had such a small signing class. LA Tech has chosen not to sign a full freshman class of players, even though they had every right to do so.

Holtz has been here for 8 years, has had rosters with some of the best talent we’ve had in Ruston in years, in the worst conference in the NCAA, and no championship. If we aren’t striving to be the best, what exactly is it we are striving for?
I never thought I'd see the day anyone on this board would rank the Sunbelt above C-USA, but here we are....

We lost our first game ever to Sunbelt team. We not only lost, we were embarrassed by a middle of the pack Sunbelt team.

When we are not having to fend off smack-talkers and trolls, we deal in reality here. Truthfully, as of February, 2021, the Belch is better than CUSA. That was clearly demonstrated in 2020 and will probably be true again in 2021. But, things change and I suspect CUSA will leapfrog over the Belch in next few years.

If you think CUSA has been better than the Belch the last couple years, I don’t know what to tell you. We were one of the better teams in the conference , and we got humiliated by a middle of the pack Belcher. I don’t think CUSA won a single bowl game.

Most of this is squarely on our folks, but a bit of it reflects upon the fact there is zero leadership at the conference level. The Belt recognized they were bad, and as a league, led by their commissioner, they implemented measures to improve.

HD: We didn't sign a full class of freshman because half of our roster would be freshman, including the redshirt freshman who have another year, last year's true freshman who also have 4 more years, and the 2021 true freshman.

The staff fully intends to bring in more players via the transfer portal depending upon needs after spring practice. Joe Sloan was on the radio in Ruston this morning talking about it. We'll bring in players who are upperclassman via the portal both in spring and summer. That should balance out the classes to certain extent.

When the spring quarter at Tech begins don't be surprised to see Tech announce some transfers. Then after spring practice ends across the country and more impact players enter the portal you'll see Tech sign some players before summer workouts begin. I would also expect to see us sign more before practice begins in late July, early August. In the end I would expect 12 to 15 more on the squad than the true freshman that were signed last week before our first game.

And keep in mind, with the new transfer rules everyone is eligible immediately.

Thank you for the update, Historian. Sounds like Holtz has left himself some room to maneuver in and around the transfer portal this spring and summer. It's funny though, many Tech fans have traditionally looked at JC transfers as maybe more trouble than they are worth. We really took pride in our 4-yr signees. Until now! But many now look at the transfer portal as some kind of Gold Mine for talent. I just hope our staff knows the difference between a high quality transfer, and simply someone else's reject.
