First conference weekend ends with WKU salvaging a 17-16 10-inning win over Charlotte using the extra-inning baserunner rule starting with a runner at second. WKU was up 7-0 after 2 and then down 15-7 after 3 1/2.
FYI the 10-run rule after 7 innings applies to all 9-inning conference games.
EAST
FAU 4-0
Charlotte 3-1
ODU 3-1
FIU 1-3
WKU 1-3
Marshall 0-4
WEST
Tech 3-1
UTSA 3-1
UAB 2-2
MT 2-2
Rice 1-3
USM 1-3
RPI rankings are totally skewed now with the inclusion of MAAC teams that have played only 4-6 games. No way that the conference ranked 27th out of 31 should have four teams in the top 17 including three of the top four.
The predicted RPI calculations on warrennolan.com have been screwed up all weekend.
Interesting note on the extra-inning baserunner rule where the inning begins with a runner on second.
Back in 1986 or so, Tech softball was tied with SFA going into the ninth inning (might have been tenth), so, to begin the ninth, SFA started with a runner on second.
At this point, Stacy Johnson had allowed no baserunners, 24 up, 24 down.
SFA bunted the runner to third and then scored on a sac fly. The next batter was also retired.
Tech did not score in the bottom of the ninth.
So, Stacy loses the game but retired all 27 batters faced.
As the Sports Information Office statistician, I put it down as a perfect game but with an asterisk.
Extra-inning baserunner rule? Give 'em all trophies and be done with it.
Conference 9-inning games only. Hopefully that won't be used during the conference tournament.
The rule only makes sense to me for extended extra inning games (12+), but I don't like it then either. Much like the stupid change likely in football this year to go to 2-point conversion plays only starting with the third OT.
Burroughs spoke to it last night on the coaches radio show. He doesn’t like the rule especially depending on what part of your batting order is due up.
Unlike most of you (who have all probably attended more baseball games than me overall) I've actually been to a professional baseball game that ended in a tie.
It was weird.
