    This seems bad

    https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/24/tech/...hip/index.html

Is this good? Why would this be good?

It's really funny how both sides hate Section 230, but for different reasons. If "corporations are people" then they get 1st amendment rights. I think the big tech companies are evil and to be completely distrusted and avoided wherever possible, but I also don't see why they have any responsibility to allow anyone to violate their user agreements or post at all for that matter.

Is there a middle ground between no moderation allowed and super limited ability to say anything unpopular? What is the legal basis for that? Shouldn't the market decide?

Also, a Disney carve-out? Come on.

Some criticism from the right here. I think this is where I am on the matter.

It's still fascism if "private companies" are enforcing it.

I'm not sure how to prevent it without creating weapons that will be used against freedom in the future.

That is, besides lowering the bar for market access.

Hoping that new options are about to happen and the “rules” won’t be selectively enforced based on being an alt-right Trump supporter vs a woke socialist.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean here.

That social media moderation (because it's enforced from the top - the owner of the website) is facist because it's authoritarian? Or do you mean like the way state run media works in China or Russia?

Alternative social media entities that either reversed this completely or just operated in a way that everyone on both sides thought was "fair" would be an example of the market correcting the problem.

Seems like that'd be the best route. For this particular "problem" with Big Tech at least.

It is unconstitutional and stupid. But those sorts of things rally the crazy part of the Republican base.

DeSantis is just a clown. A Trump wannabe.

It is also big government and anti-business.

Because the government should be in the business of telling companies how to run their business and what type of services to provide.

Seems like there is a name for that that starts with “S”.

You mean like telling them the level of carbon emissions they can emit or the EEOC telling them who to hire or which ones can open during the pandemic or ......

And DeSantis et al calls some of that socialist but supports socialism for his causes.

Btw, putting a price on carbon emissions isn’t really socialist. It would just require emitters to internalize a cost that would otherwise be an externality borne by everyone else.

Essentially, I'm afraid that these efforts to oppose Pravda, while well-intentioned, ultimately are trying to use the same tools (control of media by the State) that we should try to avoid. A baker can refuse service to sodomites but Twitter can't refuse service to Trump? But I'm not sure what other solutions exist.

By way of analogy, wealth redistribution is immoral, and it's immoral whether or not our constituents are on the receiving end.

Hopefully this can be done. However new options with current operating systems is doubtful. It’s a form of censorship that offers no current options to even the so called middle.
