The size of the stadium is fine until we consistently start selling out the facility. MLS learned that in order to create a good atmosphere smaller, sold-out stadiums are better than cavernous stadiums with lots of space in the crowds. Adding a thousand more seats will make the vast majority of our games look more weakly attended and create a worse atmosphere.
Now with that said, I had hoped that the administration had plans for erecting temporary seating when needed like for conference championships and regional hosting. That should be something easy to do, especially down RF. If we have to consistently put in temporary seating to accommodate Tech games, then it's time to start talking about adding more permanent seating in the stadium.
If I were part of a civic group or local non-profit, I would consider showing up in the general area of those dorms with ice chests full of water/Gatorade/soft drinks and do my own concessions. I don't know if Tech will capitalize on that crowd, and who knows what the RPD Barney's will allow regarding personal ice chests inside of the ticketed area that Tech will create. It's a great way for someone or some group to make a little scratch.
My guess is that the empty seats were paid for, but unused. No doubt Tech fans would have used them if they could have. Berm was the fullest it had been since Arkansas series. My point is not that we lacked attendance, but that we only got to or near capacity 3 to 6 times this year. Our stadium size is perfect IMO.
Want to see what 50% or less capacity looks like on a regular basis...go visit the aluminum in Hattiesburg or Lafayette.
I think the size of stadium is fine for current attendance. The need for stadium expansion/additional seating will occur if Ruston/Lincoln parish (and surrounding area) population starts growing and student enrollment goes up.
Baseball is a multiday sport all season long which is made up mostly of local attendance.
No one is talking about adding 1,000 seats right now. 500-600 more chairbacks should have been included in the original plans, and that would have taken care of immediate issues now. Those extra seats would have been very useful based on the visiting ticket requirements for regionals and super regionals.
Tickets – Visiting Teams (New for 2021). Two hundred (200) tickets must be held for each visiting team at regional sites for the games in which a given team participates. All of these tickets must be in an area between first and third bases. New for 2021, at super regional competition, 600 tickets must be held for the visiting team. 400 of these tickets must be located in an area between first and third bases. The remaining 200 tickets should be located in contiguous block(s) of reserved seating section(s) of the stadium. Visiting team fans should not be provided with any restricted-view seating. The tickets must be held until 10 a.m. local time on the day of the game for the participating team(s) for the games in which they participate in the regionals and super regionals.
As with most things, Tech seems to be smaller minded and a slow learner about where it is in the world and where we, the fans and supporters want it to be. Hopefully we’ll change that and grow quick enough to meet the current enthusiasm. One thing is for sure, if the Tech powers at be keep a foot on the brake and don’t live up to the fan’s wants, things will slowly but surely backslide to where we were pre Goff & Burroughs. The formula for a program’s success is a satisfied fan base that grows with the team and drives the team to get better. It’s a symbiotic relationship. Tech has to encourage and make it as easy as possible for the fans to be present and then it’s the fans who fuel a winning team. We’re right there on the cusp of a major step up. Please Tech, don’t ruin it.
