Skip Holtz Specials at Tech, A History of Tech 4th Quarter Comebacks and Collapses

In the Skip Holtz era at Tech, Holtz finishes with a 64-50 record.

    4TH QUARTER COMEBACK WINS
Of those 64 wins, just 5 were through 4th quarter comebacks. All 5 of those wins were from 2017 forward with two in both 2019 and 2020. The only double-digit 4th quarter deficit erased was in the 2020 UAB game.

2017 at Western Kentucky (won 23-22)
Tech was down 22-13 at the 6:09 mark left in the game and kicked the game-winning FG to make it 23-22 Tech with 0:02 left.

2019 at Rice (won 23-20, OT)
Game was tied 14-14 until Rice went ahead on a FG with 2:51 left. Tech forced OT with a tying FG with 1:10 left. Rice kicked a FG in the 1st OT, but Tech won it on a 12-yard TD run.

2019 vs Southern Miss (won 45-30)
Tech was down 27-24 until taking the lead for good with 12:02 left. USM closed it to 38-30 but Tech added another TD to finish out a 21-3 4th quarter.

2020 at Southern Miss (won 31-30)
Tech was down 27-24 before USM added a FG to make it 30-24 with 5:06 left. The Anthony to Hebert 4-yard TD pass with 0:14 left plus the extra point won it.

    2020 vs UAB (won 37-34, 2OT)
Tech was down 31-17 until scoring converted TDs with 14:54 and 0:10 left to tie it. The teams swapped FGs in the first OT before Zach Hannibal's goal line fumble recovery set up Tech's winning FG in OT2.

    4TH QUARTER COME-FROM-AHEAD LOSSES
Of the 50 Holtz losses at Tech, the Bulldogs held leads in the 4th quarter in 16 (32%) of those losses. Tech suffered at least one 4th quarter come-from-ahead loss in each season of the Holtz tenure except for 2019. Tech held a double-digit 4th quarter lead in 7 of those 16 losses, and it had at least a 6-point 4th quarter lead in 14 of those 16 games.

The main point of several of these losses was that Tech settled for FGs instead of extending leads with TDs when it got into scoring position in the 4th quarter. And that doesn't mention taking FGs instead of TDs earlier in these games.

    2013 at Kansas (lost 13-10)
Tech was up 10-3 before Kansas tied it with 9:54 left. The Jayhawks kicked the game-winning 52-yard FG as time ran out.

2014 vs Northwestern State (lost 30-27)
Tech was up 20-10 and 27-17 until a Demon TD made it 27-24 with 4:20 left. The Demons tied it with 1:05 left, and then got a tipped interception to set up the winning 47-yard FG as time ran out.

2014 at Old Dominion (lost 30-27, OT)
Tech was up 24-17 before ODU tied it with 6:17 left. Tech kicked a FG in OT, but the Monarchs scored on an 8-yard pass to win it.

2014 at Marshall (C-USA Championship Game, lost 26-23)
Tech was up 23-16 until a Marshall FG made it 23-19 with 8:34 left. The game winning TD by the Herd came with 1:50 left to complete a 68-yard 11-play drive.

    2015 at Kansas State (lost 39-33, 3OT)
Tech led 20-13 before the Wildcats tied it with 7:04 left and went ahead by a FG with 2:44 left. Tech forced OT on a 45-yard FG to end regulation. The teams traded TDs and FGs in the first 2 OTs before a 3rd and 16 31-yard pass put the Wildcats up 39-33 in OT3. Four Tech incomplete passes ended the game.

    2016 at Arkansas (lost 21-20)
Tech led 20-14 until Arkansas scored the eventual game-winning TD with 6:37 left. A 4th down conversion by Arkansas with 3:35 left allowed the Razorbacks to run out the clock.

2016 at Middle Tennessee (lost 38-34)
Tech led 27-17 until the Blue Raiders scored two straight TDs with 11:11 and 6:58 left. Tech regained the lead with 3:56 left, but a 5-play 75-yard drive put the Blue Raiders up for good with 2:36 left. Tech got to the MT 6 but turned the ball over on downs with 50 seconds left.

2017 at South Carolina (lost 17-16)
Tech led 13-0 and was driving before J'Mar Smith threw an interception at the Gamecock 3 with 3:42 left in the 3rd. South Carolina then went on a 16-play, 97-yard drive to cut the margin to 13-7 with 11:06 left. The Gamecocks took the lead 14-13 with 4:52 left before Jonathan Barnes put Tech back up 16-14 on a 25-yard FG with 0:55 left. South Carolina then drove 65 yards on 6 plays for the game-winning FG with 0:04 left after a 24-yard 3rd down scramble and a 41-yard batted catch provided all of the yardage.

    2017 vs Southern Miss (lost 34-27, 2OT)
Tech led 27-16 until a 49-yard FG made it 27-19 with 1:23 left. USM recovered the onside kick and completed a 22-yard TD pass with 0:31 left. A 2-point conversion pass tied it to force OT. Both teams threw interceptions in the first OT, but the Golden Eagles scored on the first play of OT2, and Tech was unable to convert.

2017 vs North Texas (lost 24-23)
Tech led 23-17 on a FG with 13:35 to play. North Texas took the lead on a 9-play, 78-yard drive with 6:04 left. A missed 53-yard FG attempt with 2:39 left was Tech's last chance.

2018 at Southern Miss (lost 21-20)
Tech led 20-14 on a FG with 13:40 left. A 14-play, 85-yard TD drive put USM up for good with 6:02 to play. Tech drove but had to punt and was unable to get the ball back.

    2020 at UTSA (lost 27-26)
Tech led 26-13 before two Roadrunner drives in the 4th quarter led to TDs with 10:28 and 6:16 left. Tech had two more drives but couldn't get into scoring range.

2021 at Mississippi State (lost 35-34)
Tech led 34-14 after a 33-yard FG with 13:11 left. A long kickoff return set up Mississppi State for a 3-play, 21 yard drive to make it 34-21 with 12:01 to play. Two 3-and-out drives that gained 9 yards total set up MSU drives of 77 and 52 yards to make the score 35-34 with 3:37 left. Tech drove 47 yards but missed a 46-yard FG try as time expired.

    2021 vs SMU (lost 39-37)
Tech trailed 33-28 to start the 4th quarter, but regained the lead 34-33 on a 6-yard TD pass from Kendall to Williams with 5:07 left. The 2-point conversion pass was no good. Tech got the ball back after holding SMU on downs and made it 37-33 with 0:36 left on a Jacob Barnes 47-yard FG. SMU then drove 73 yards for the game-winning TD on a 33-yard tipped pass as time expired.

2021 vs Old Dominion (lost 23-20)
Tech trailed 17-13 to start the 4th quarter but took a 20-17 lead on a 7-yard Marcus Williams TD run with 12:01 left. ODU tied the game with a 29-yard FG with 1:52 left after a 20 play, 58 yard drive that took 10:09 off the clock. Tech drove to the ODU 45 but failed on a 4th and 3 pass play with 28 seconds left. ODU moved the ball 26 yards and kicked the game-winning 46-yard FG as time expired.

    2021 at Rice (lost 35-31)
Tech led 31-21 until Rice scored on a 31-yard TD pass with 4:12 left to make it 31-28. After an interception Tech stopped Rice on a fake FG attempt with 2:38 left. Tech was not able to make a first down and a 48-yard punt return put the Owls at the Tech 18. A defensive pass interference call made it 1st and goal at the 3, and Rice took the lead 35-31 with 1:01 left on a 3-yard TD pass. Tech drove to Rice 33 before another interception sealed the game.

Holy crap, 31% of our losses we were up in the 4th. That explains why it’s so hard to be a Tech fan. That South Carolina loss was a tough one.

    Wow

Thank goodness we have a diehard group of fans and boosters. The average wal mart fan would ever stomach this.

I've planned to go fishing and mow my yard. I won't spend another dime involving Tech football.

As of now I am planning to be there for the SLU game. It might be a rare opportunity to actually see Holtz not totally blow one. I figure we'll wear them down in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs and build enough of a lead that not even Skippy can blow it in the 4th. We will get outscored and outplayed in the 4th qtr though.

Thanks for putting this info together and letting everyone see! I knew we had blown a lot of leads but I had forgotten all of those mentioned above! I think from this point on I will keep a log of our 4th qtr losses! No lead is too safe nor is there too little time left for Skippy to blow a game!

Re: Skip Holtz Specials at Tech, A History of Tech 4th Quarter Comebacks and Collapse

    This thread should be stickied.

It’s long past time for us to move on from Skip. I can appreciate the stability he has provided to our program in the sense that we’ve avoided the full on meltdown years, but if we’re serious about taking any more steps forward, someone else has to take what he’s done and keep pushing. The double edged sword with him is the caliber of players he’s recruited. On one hand, he and his assistants have done an outstanding job of bringing in talent and shipping many of them off to the NFL after college, but the fact that we have nothing but some bowl wins to show for it speaks volumes about his ability to lead and coach.

Re: Skip Holtz Specials at Tech, A History of Tech 4th Quarter Comebacks and Collapse

Yeah, I couldn’t have recalled all of that even under intense interrogation, but the feeling in my bones from have experienced all of those inept coaching loses is there. As we all know what’s written between the lines is that in every game... Every Game, even the ones that Tech wins there’s a point when Holtz pulls back on the reigns to try to coast to victory and somehow, probably thanks to Tech talent, the Dawgs sometimes hang on.

Holtz’s philosophy and strategies for winning are seriously flawed. He’s probably the only coach in the country who loses so many wins.

So, 1 game into 2021 and Tech is 0-1 when they should be 1-0 simply means Holtz has got one of his give away wins out of the way. Tech fans only have 2 more to go through this season. Buckle up it’s going to be another rocky ride to a predictably unsatisfying and under accomplishing season.

Re: Skip Holtz Specials at Tech, A History of Tech 4th Quarter Comebacks and Collapse

I’ll give it to Holtz, he does find some quality players to transfer to Ruston. On the flip side he doesn’t do a good enough job of recruiting high school players! The transfer portal really helped this year bringing in talent. But if your head coach’s reputation becomes that he doesn’t know how to win a big game then that portal may not be as beneficial in the future. Players may choose other schools. Our administration has to do a better job of selling Tech to the general public first, then our head coach has to do a better job competing for quality players in their living rooms! And lastly we must beat the P5 teams that we have on the ropes to solidify our reputation as a team the media will talk about!

Two 3-and-out drives that gained 9 yards total set up MSU drives of 77 and 52 yards to make the score 35-34 with 3:37 left. Tech drove 47 yards but missed a 46-yard FG try as time expired.
This might not be proof, but it's pretty damning evidence.

Re: Skip Holtz Specials at Tech, A History of Tech 4th Quarter Comebacks and Collapse

For perspective, per a quick google search, in the NFL the team leading entering 4th quarter wins 87.5% of the time.

We're talking here about losses, so what is holtz record when leading in the 4th?

    Leading after 3 quarters--55-12 (.821)
    Tied after 3 quarters--2-1 (.667)
    Trailing after 3 quarters--4-29 (.121)

The 12 losses when leading after 3 quarters plus the 2015 Kansas State game tied 13-13 after 3 are the 13 losses listed in the top post.
The 4 wins when trailing after 3 quarters plus the 2019 Rice game tied 14-14 after 3 are the 5 wins listed in the top post.
The other tie game after 3 was the 2016 Navy win where Tech never trailed in the 4th quarter.

And for those who may wonder, there was a prequel to the Tech history. In his three seasons at USF, Holtz went 16-21. The Bulls lost 7 times (33.3% of the losses) when having a lead at some point in the 4th quarter with 2 double-digit blown leads. Three of the 16 wins were 4th quarter comebacks with one double-digit comeback.
