    No punt offense

I know we have in the past about Pulaski Academy and playing the numbers about offensive possessions. With the quality of defensive play, and our apparent infatuation with kicking field goals, why don't we give this a shot. At least make thinks entertaining.

Nope. Go onside kick everything, no field goals. Maximize possession. If defense isn't gonna stop anybody anyways, may as well give the short field.

Pro coaches must be studying the analytics. Never seen so many 4th down attempts. There were 5 in the Saints-Packers game. Packers went for a 4th and 1 from their 30 in Q1.

Packers were desperate to generate some kind of offense. Saints' D curb-stomped 'em. Saints 38 Packers 3

Kevin Kelly's no punt got him at 2-0, but they are going against NAIA schools so far.

The Ravens are the most analytics driven team in the NFL. Watch them tonight and count the number of times they do things that would frustrate the old football guard to no end.
The NFL data science crowd loves them. The go with the stat heads more often than any other team. They go for it on 4th a lot.
The numbers don't lie. Going for it on 4th down in a ton of circumstances that coaches traditionally DON'T, overall, produces better outcomes. There are also times to go for 2 that make no sense to the old football guard but statistically speaking are better decisions. 538 did a great article on it a while back.

The NFL is getting it. Sooner or later smart college coaches will come around.

Yep. Both teams went for it several times on 4th in ways that surprised me.

    Re: No punt offense

When Derrick Dooley was at Tech, I got to visit with him on occasion and I remember discussed using percentages of past performance as a basis for making calls in a game. I was impressed with all the percentages he had memorized. I questioned a call he had recently made in a loss to Hawaii. That led to me basically telling him with a grin that if he had an engineer in the booth things would probably go better. But the main issue of that particular discussion was PATs. He said, as I recall, he felt we were around 0.92 kicking PATs. I said so divide that by 2 and it tells you that is equal to a 0.46 successful rate for 2 point conversions. He said he felt we would perform better than 50% on 2 point conversions, but argued me down when I said the numbers are saying we should go for 2 every time. I said, but after 10 touchdowns you would have 10 extra points instead of 9.
