Cumberland College had discontinued its football program before the season but was not allowed to cancel its game. Georgia Tech coach John Heisman would not allow it because Cumberland's baseball team had crushed Georgia Tech earlier that year 22–0 (amidst allegations that Cumberland used professionals). This probably accounted for Georgia Tech running up the score on the Bulldogs of Cumberland, as Heisman was also Georgia Tech's baseball coach. “Cumberland’s team” was 12-16 “players” made of frat boys who knew the former student manager of the football team. Georgia Tech wasn’t the Yellow Jackets back then, but were the Engineers.

There is a story that has emerged from this game, probably not true, but is funny. Well, might be some truth in it.

While trying to run a fake, in the old Wing T type of misdirection offense, the Cumberland QB drops the ball and it goes bouncing straight toward the RB, who wanted no part of it. He'd been pummeled enough by the much bigger, stronger GT defenders. So he says to his QB, "You dropped it, you pick it up."

Not sure if that's true, but it is pretty, damn funny.

Not a good look for the father of the Heisman Trophy.
