This team was NOT PROPERLY PREPARED to play UTEP. LA Tech fans are tired of the Low Football IQ from this team. That's on the coaches. You need examples?
- Against UTEP, Tech threw 3 INT's and no TD passes
- A Tech team that averaged over 35 points per game managed to score only 3 points against UTEP.
- Tech Punt returner Smoke Harris still won't catch a punt. He constantly leaves Tech with bad field position.
- Tech's receivers still aren't "defending" the badly thrown balls when they need too.
- The OL still commits too many "False Start" penalties. At one point, Tech had a 1st down at the UTEP 4 yd line. 3 plays later Tech had been pushed back near mid field, and threw an INT at the Miner 35 yd line.
- Tech's DL committed a foolish "off sides" penalty on one of UTEP's key 4th down conversions, giving the Miners an automatic 1st down.
Those are examples of "LOW FOOTBALL IQ", and need to be fixed.
Not stopping UTEP on 3rd downs
Not just 3rd downs. Try 3rd and 7+. A defense should get off the field at least 3 out of every 4 of those situations.
For the game UTEP was 5 for 12 on 3rd downs of 7 yards or more. Also throw in a 4th and 1 conversion after a 3rd and 10 on the opening drive. Failing to get off the field after half of the 3rd and 7+ situations doesn't cut it.
Cover zilch on 3rd and long is the recipe for this continued failure. That's 100% on coaching.

calling a timeout on 4th and 1 just to run a play up the middle, OUT OF THE SHOTGUN.
On your own one yard line and running the ball OUT OF THE SHOTGUN, when the other team KNOWS you are going to run.
The other team KNOWS that you are going to run, so get out of the D**N shotgun.
Everyone knows what he is going to call. We know and the opposing coaches damn sure know it. The worst part is they don’t have to watch multiple game films to game plan us. Skip shows them 95% of his plays in the first three offensive series and then just repeats the rest of the game.
Hardest part for the opposing teams in the film room is staying awake with a Holtz offense.
Did anyone notice how effective the trick play was? Why can’t Holtz be creative in all his players calling?
