Guice, Wood, and Holtz are all worthless. Fire 'em all and start over.

An "off-the-field" incident last week may very well have been related to academics since the quarter ended last week. And with as many transfers as were brought in, the chances of issues with them is by nature higher.
But again this goes to my point...
These same type of "transfers" that were brought in cost us a C-USA Championship because of academics. Holtz's recruits have to be judged on the good and the bad. There are incidents scattered throughout his time at Tech that were costly. Failing to keep your starters academically qualified is something that has continued to bite Holtz.
A pattern of issues off the field.
We usually get hit with these losses (three times under Holtz) at the beginning of Winter Quarter when school starts back. He lets them play after knowing they flunked out for the Fall Quarter and likely have not gone to class for weeks. He even lets these players use the facilities to train for the NFL combine after flunking out.
This "off the field incident" is probably nothing other than a fight among players and/or coaches. Happens every week.
I said above --on Nov 20th-- that LA Tech officials had to fire Holtz within the next 7 to 10 days, or be prepared to suffer the nasty, long term, repercussions. Well, they fired him on the 6th day. CONGRATULATIONS, to our Tech leaders! You've done a good thing for our football program, and left yourself enough runway to hire a high quality replacement in time to give the next leader a solid chance to settle the program down in time for recruiting and before the transfer portal goes viral again. Because Guice and Wood were proactive and acted with prudence, Tech might still get through this thing with minimal damage to the football program.
But don't drag the coaching search out too long. You don't have to interview everybody. Just find a really good coach, and hire him ASAP. Recruits and team members are waiting for your choice. LEAD THEM!
BTW, I believe this "Off the Field" incident mentioned above was when Wood & Guice first brought up the idea of Holtz moving on. Wood likely told Holtz that his time at LA Tech is over, and that he was going to let Holtz coach the rest of the way, but that only Sloan could call the plays. At least, this is my speculation.
During the game against Rice, the LA Tech radio team said Sloan was calling the plays for Holtz during that game. I suspect it was simply a carry-over from the decision made the previous week against USM. But --other than what the radio team said-- this rest is pure speculation on my part.
