It didn't take long for SFA to remove Power from its list of current FB coaches on its website. I did learn something I didn't know though - former Tech WR Myles White is an assistant coach at SFA (inside WRs). There sure are a lot of former Tech players who are coaches - wouldn't be surprised if that is true of a lot of schools.

SFA ranked in the top 20 in FCS for Total Defense and Scoring Defense this year.

SFA finished 8-4, gave up an avg of 19.5 pts/game. Losses included 28-22 to Texas Tech, 21-20 to SHSU, and 28-24 to Jax State.

I don't know Scott Power's pedigree or coaching resume' so he's just a name to me. Of course, I have some concerns he was coaching at SFA, really nothing more than a Southland Conference school as their recent move to the WAC is just a lateral move. Doesn't mean he can't coach though! He might be a very good defensive coach and ends up using Tech as a steppingstone to bigger/better things to come.

Defense wins championships. So, this is a critical hire.

SFA was 16 in Defensive SP+ for FCS.

Success at his current level does not guarantee similar success at the FBS level as the offensive talent of FBS teams should be higher. However, the quality of defensive players at Tech should generally be stronger overall than at the FCS level. So if his coaching, play calling, leadership, and recruiting skills are solid, he has a strong chance of doing well for us. We need a solid defense to complement the improved and more exciting offense we are anticipating under HCSC.

I have seen tweets from some of LA Tech's staff (folks who were here pre-Cumbie announcement) who are out recruiting, but have not seen any announcements regarding who will be retained from Holtz's staff. I get that a person continues to work on a job until/unless they are are told they are no longer employed, but I expected we'd hear something by now regarding who was staying and who was told they were not being retained. I had lunch with one of our Associate AD's yesterday. We have two 2021 coaches that are being retained by new coach Sonny Cumbie; one is Coach Brock Hays, and I apologize, but I can't remember the name of the other one. However, both are apparently deeply involved in recruiting for LA Tech.

I had lunch with one of our Associate AD's yesterday. We have two 2021 coaches that are being retained by new coach Sonny Cumbie; one is Coach Brock Hays, and I apologize, but I can't remember the name of the other one. However, both are apparently deeply involved in recruiting for LA Tech.

Brock Hays, Anthony Camp, Kurt Hester, Paul Turner, and the GAs from 2021 are listed on Tech's 2022 Coach's Page. Hays, Camp, and Turner all have Louisiana roots. Hays played at Grambling, Camp at McNeese, and Turner at Tech. Turner is listed as a defensive analyst. Hester also has Louisiana roots.

Looking up SFA's staff, didn't realize Myles White is there. Looks like he spent a year with Dykes at SMU and then got a WR job at SFA. Love seeing former Tech football players getting into coaching.

Well, first I write "it'll probably be a few weeks" and then I see we're hiring SFA's DC.

I guess we can expect him to be familiar with our new conference mates SHSU.

Apparently I was a little off here. We're filling out the staff faster than I would have thought. I'm happy about that and happy about the guys coming onboard.

I can imagine that Cumbie is the kind of person that would daydream about being a HC and would already have a short list of who he would like to have on his staff.
