Dude is exciting to listen to. Already a fan of Coach Cumbie! LETS GO!! #HBTD
Glad Fletch cleared up that Cumbie will be calling the plays. It soundslike he was saying the 2 coordinators will take over more of that duty as he builds trust in them.
Great interview. He's saying all the right things (and boy, even for someone who isn't a big time insider like me, you can read some interesting stuff between some of those lines).
A repeating theme definitely seems to be circling the subjects of 1) coaches and players relationships and 2) coaching the players ‘hard’. It sounds to me like maybe the leadership of former coaching staff didn’t invest themselves much into making the coaches and players a cohesive part of the ‘team’. And we all know very well from our game day observations that the 2021 Bulldogs weren’t coached hard because they didn’t improve at anything. The truth is that the longer the season went on and the worse our competition got, the worse we got.
I liked what he said about SFA's DC getting his interest when they schemed and coached against him at Texas Tech. I've heard that before as a coaching cliche - if you're an offensive guy who gets a HC job look for a DC that gave you fits (and the opposite for a defensive coach who becomes HC).
Coincidentally, y'all see who our FCS game is next season?
Really enjoyable interview.
Didn't take him long to figure out our weaknesses. He nailed them when Fletch asked what our greatest needs are- OT, QB, CB.
Did you notice his thought process on hiring Scott Power as DC? He based it on the Raiders games against SFA and how Power presented a lot of challenges to his direct opponent Coach Sonny? Coach Sonny said it was a chess match and that stayed in his mind.
To me, it is a sign of greatness when a CEO/Head Coach puts aside their ego and hires excellent people who CHALLENGE them. Excellent excellent hire. Our defense is going to be creative and relentless.
Unfortunately, I heard the C word during the AD's introduction of Cumbie. I cringed when I heard him say it.
