Mean Green very lucky to win 67-63 in OT and will host the Mississippi State at Virginia winner.
The Basketball Classic only got 21 teams instead of the planned 32, but one of those withdrew "due to a lack of healthy players". I suspect that is code for something else, LOL.
The fools running this "tournament" gave Wofford a bye when they had 21 teams. I guess Merrimack (14-16) gets a bye because they were the team stood up on the cancellation. And there are 9 first round games scheduled, of which 3 have already been played.
If they play those 9 first round games out they would still have 11 teams left. Even if they pair the "bye" teams to play they would be at 10 teams.
They should have stopped at 16 teams when it became obvious they were never getting to 32. Or pushed to get to any even number of teams.
Very good decision by Tech to avoid that disaster.
Teams with losing records are in the Basketball Classic. What's worse than being in the Classic? Being in it and NOT winning the whole thing, whoa!
On another note, I was surprised to see Iona in the NIT and not in the NCAAs. They had a 25-7 record and Rick Pitino as coach! But they lost to the White-less UF Gators last night, so I guess they didn't deserve a berth in the Dance anyway.
Meanwhile poor ole MTSU has to endure playing on ESPN2 and tonight are in the CBI championship game. Who would want to win a tournament championship on national TV? Certainly not Louisiana Tech...winning is beneath us and not worthy of our participating.*
And I watched some of the Vandy-Xavier NIT game, also on ESPN. Silly folks, the game was sold out! Guess no one told those 10,000+ fans they were not in the Big Dance. Oh my!
*of course, there is also the strong possibility that Konkol and Junior sabotaged any desire to play in the CBI since they were leaving.

Sources: The NIT semis and finals will not be held in Madison Square Garden in 2023 and 2024, ending a run there that began in 1938. The next two years are out for bid, with destinations ranging from historic venues like Hinkle FieldHouse to more resort destinations like Vegas.
MTSU UNCW coming down to the wire. Pretty good game. MTSU up by 1 with 11 ticks left and Raiders to the line for two
