You guys miss the point. We could get donations easily enough to replace or upgrade our production equipment. However, just like a politician solving a problem and losing a campaign talking point, we can’t puff up and say we are doing more with less if we upgrade.

The commercial could have been fine while maintaining the same concept. After she says "we do some of this", it cuts to boring b-rolls of a guy looking at a laptop, a guy playing a guitar, a girl nonchalantly walking a horse. The shots are extremely dull and demotivating; The camera isn't moving and the people are static. Worst of all, the background music stays at a background level of sound during the b-roll. There isn't any other stimuli- just boring b-roll and background music. It's completely underwhelming.

Choosing different b-roll is the first step. They need to be filmed with a moving camera to create more excitement in the shot. Secondly a person waving a flag isn't going to create excitement if you just see the jumbotron behind him. You need a panning camera shot of the crowd while they are cheering and active. Guy waving flag in front of them? Even better! A guy working on a laptop? NO. Have a tracking shot of students in a laboratory being active in mid-experiment by mixing ingredients just for an example. You need active, energetic shots in a 30 second commercial.

They need to use more upbeat music as well while b-roll is happening. The background music stays low and underwhelming. Choose more exciting music (maybe the fight song!) and pick up the volume during the b-roll.

If you do this simple steps, the commercial would be fine. Nothing spectacular but nothing to groan about.


Also, this is a bit discriminatory and I fully admit it, but IMO having a person with such a distinct southern accent doesn't really help the university's goal of becoming a nationally or even internationally desired institution. The unfortunate fact is that the southern accent is linked with low levels of intelligence. Obviously this isn't true and it's a sad reflection of Southern portrayal in media, but I think students and people in general from around the country will hear the accent and have a negative reaction to it. Using a speaker with a "standard" American pronunciation used in news broadcasts would do better IMO.

Yeah, I'm with you. Everything Dawgonit said is great except that the accent is the best part of the current commercial. The person doing the voice-over should always sound like they're from the greater Ruston metropolitan area.
