    Bill Russell

Sad news to hear even at his age. He packed a lot of living in 88 years. Maybe the greatest basketball player of all-time.

Here is my Mt. Rushmore of professional basketball players (in no particular order).

    Russell, Jordan, Kareem, LeBron.

    What's yours?

    Hell no on Lebron.

Kinda hard to whittle it down to so few. LeBron would not be on any list I would make, but Magic Johnson would probably be on there.

Interesting choices both. I really enjoyed watching Magic play, very entertaining. Let's compare the three.

NBA Championships: Lebron 4, Kobe 5, Magic 5.
    All-Star Games: Lebron 18, Kobe 18, Magic 12.
MVP Seasons: Lebron 4, Kobe 1, Magic 3.
Finals MVP: Lebron 4, Kobe 2, Magic 3.
All NBA 1st team: Lebron 13, Kobe 11, Magic 9.
All NBA Defensive 1st team: Lebron 9, Kobe 12, Magic 0.
Scoring Titles: Lebron 1, Kobe 2, Magic 0.
Career PPG: Lebron 27.1, Kobe 25.0, Magic 19.5.
Career RPG: Lebron 7.5, Kobe 5.2, Magic 7.2.
Career APG: Lebron 7.4, Kobe 4.7, Magic 11.2.
Career Points: Lebron 37062, Kobe 33643, Magic 17707.
Career Rebounds: Lebron 10210, Kobe 7047, Magic 6559.
Career Assists: Lebron 10045, Kobe 6306, Magic 10141.
Career Win Shares: Lebron 249.52, Kobe 172.74, Magic 155.79.

All three players are great, but based on career accomplishments I must stick with Lebron.

I think that's valid. Lebron plays in a different era, but Kobe's teams were loaded too. Ultimately, I went with Kobe because I think he's one of the greatest competitors I've ever watched play the game. He's a lot like Jordan in that. Legendary work ethic and amazing competitor.

I hear ya. I wasn't arguing against Kobe but more so agruing for my pick of Lebron. No right or wrong answers really, as long as you can defend your choices, which you did. I would argue against a list that didn't include both Jordan and Russell though.

    Re: Bill Russell

I’ve thought about this some, and have a slightly different take.

If the question is “who did the most” then I think Jordan is the obvious GOAT.

Another way to ask the question might be “who would you take #1 in an all time draft? In that case, I think I’d take Magic, Bird or Duncan. What stands out to me is that while those three were great, they also made the other players on their teams better. That strikes me as critical if you’re wanting to build a great team.

How many of you saw Russell play?
I'm an asshole! What's your excuse?
