I am concerned about depth and about the punting.
Loved the big leg on kick offs, Allen is a reason to be excited, and we do have some talent in places.

Welcome back to the emotional roller-coaster of the football season I guess.

There is absolutely no reason a college punter shouldn’t average 42-45 per punt, right? I can kick it 26 yards. That is truly awful.

I am ok with him installing his system and then bringing in the players to make it work. I know this sounds stupid, but the goal is to try and win every game!! However, it was apparent that wasn't the goal under Skip! I can live with growing pains if we are working towards a goal. Skip was building a retirement portfolio at our record and attendances expense.

I know some people say fit the system to your players but our old system was crap, so lets blow it up and every kids will know exactly how bad ass we will be before they ever come into the program.

If we get consistent QB play, maybe. I look for us to have flashes of a good offense, but no consistency for the majority of the year.

AD should have a campus wide ‘We Need A Punter” campaign and hold tryouts every Monday. SOMEBODY on campus is a better punter than what’s on the team now.

They need to use Griffin Hebert more on exactly the type of play he scored. He’s a hoss, has speed and size, and he can occupy a safety enough for a one on one deep ball to the Frosh superstar. White boy legit burnt 3 SEC DB brothers last night. (It was really four, one gave up in first 5 yards).

One has to remember that USF down in Tampa is still recovering from the Skip Holtz Effect. That coach is like Afghanistan which is known as “the place were empires go to die”. I saw in Coach Sonny last night an intensity and a generally pissed off look for not winning the game. We didn’t see that from Holtz. I think Sonny will get us back to a winning season this year.

Feels like it's gonna be like a Sonny Dykes 2010 season where we tried to find a QB in Hakmi, Jenkins, Cameron.

They actually have walk-on tryouts scheduled on September 8. Couldn't come at a better time!

I’ve said the same thing. This is what happens when the last guy leaves the program without a single QB on the roster that can play D1 football.

Yep. Just like 2013. Holtz had to get Sokol and Drisjel to turn that mess around. Maybe one of these guys can be a Sokol-type player this year.

Still need a defense though… that looks like the bigger issue.

We averaged like 17 points per game the first half of that season. And even in year two, we really leaned on our defense.

It's going to take a minute.

Re: LA Tech Football Opens 2022 Season at Missouri Thursday Night - latechsports.com

As I watched the game last night, I thought we were outplayed by a very weak Mizzo team. I wondered if this had anything to do with the experience or pedigree of our coaching staff. I remember when I started seeing announcements on who Sonny was hiring, I raised my eyebrows at some of the additions. If you look at our staff, we have 3 coaches from SFA (Power - Defensive Coord, Walker - CBs, and Young - OL), 1 coach from Texas A&M Commerce (Walker - DL), and 1 from Navarro College (Parr - Co-offensive Coord, TE). My guess is that if there are vacancies at TCU, A&M, etc., they don't go looking at these types of schools (of course, these schools can afford to pay better as well) to find coaching replacements. I truly no nothing other than what I read on the coaches pages about these guys, but I wondered if this had anything to do with the quality of play that was present last night). Another thought as well is that the coaches can only coach up guys to a certain level, which with our current roster, may not be very high. Thoughts?

Re: LA Tech Football Opens 2022 Season at Missouri Thursday Night - latechsports.com

I’d say most of our offensive effort was directed right into Mizzou’s defensive strength. We couldn’t run wide because they were way too fast on the edges and never seemed to be out of position. They played their positions very well. They were almost always in the right place at the right time. I don’t think we ran near enough quit hitters into the line. Passing wise the only time we beat them was when we went deep. That’s probably because they’d been coached all week that Tech would be trying to work it’s short passing game. They were ready for it at every step.
Like they say the biggest improvement is between game 1 and game 2 and that’s what I’m expecting.

That’s a fair point. I think the defense isn’t as bad as last nights game looked. It would be interesting to see what Missouri’s average starting field position was. I bet it wasn’t much worse than the 40 yard line. That’s a lot to ask from any defense, no matter the talent level. Tech offense never put together a sustained drive to let the defense rest, it was either a quick long strike for a TD or a 3 and out. As the offense finds a rhythm of sorts, I think the defensive numbers will look much better.

What Tech should do is put its dollars where we can legitimately win.....rebuild the WOMEN'S BASKETBALL program. We are a women's basketball school, always was and always will be. Bring back the Lady Techsters and forget competing for an impossible football title.
