Three and outs in our own territory with no punt game is just gifting points to the opponent.
Goes without saying that the SFA and USA games will set the tone for this season. And Tech's conference schedule isn't actually Murderer's Row either given this week's early results.
We have a better chance trying at a women's basketball natty than in football. The gap in football is too great and the powers to be don't want a school like Tech in the conversation anyway. Unless the power 5 split away from the rest of the DI, it doesn't make sense to pour money into a football program that doesn't have a shot from the beginning. Tech got lots of attention when it was REGULARLY competing for natties in women's basketball, now we are on the cusp of irrelevancy like ULM.
If we are already done with football and ready to talk about programs at Tech with real potential, we can probably talk baseball, softball, and bowling. The end.
Has everything to do with the Missouri game. Missouri is a bad SEC team and if Tech was any good, we would have been much more competitive. I don't think TECH-MISSOURI was any different from VIRGINIA TECH-ODU other than the fact that ODU beat Virginia Tech TWICE in the last 3 years. Tech is still hanging on to victories over Michigan St. and Alabama eons ago in addition to being in a conference that is forgotten. Put the money elsewhere! Football will be mediocre indefinitely.
Beyond that, it’s not true. We could put all our resources into women’s hoops and we still couldn’t compete with the top programs. Title XI made the big boys pour more money into their women’s sports than we could possibly compete with.
Plus, there’s no return on WBB.
Nobody said Tech is any good yet. But Tech could put its entire football budget into WBB, and at best we'd be talking about a team that still doesn't get past the first weekend of the Dance. As already stated, the ROI just doesn't make sense.
Virginia Tech is the perfect example of an overrated P5 team that feasted on the weak sister basketball schools in its conference for far too long while it had a legendary football coach. And it hasn't had that legendary coach for a while now. Virginia Tech AD probably was looking at 10 wins out of that 10-year ODU contract, and the score is now 2-2.
I'm not hanging on to any Tech wins from 20 years ago. And there weren't any regular season P5 wins by Skippy that Tech could actually still hang on to. Part of the reason he is gone is the Mississippi State loss last year that Skippy choked away to change the entire complexion of last season.
