If you cannot run the ball and cannot stop the run, you are not going to win. It looked like the 2012 defense without the 2012 offense to bail it out.
Lots of indications of poor coaching (delay of game, offsides, holding… not very disciplined team. But this is Cumbie’s first rodeo so it will take him a bit to put it all together.
The only bright spot was the crossing patterns. The receivers looked really good. The QB looked good for the most part. Holtz wasn’t able to develop a run game here after Dixon graduated; Cumbie has to find a way to develop a balanced offense. It’s too much to ask of the QB to win it by himself.
Is Cumbie Sonny Dykes? He’s better in year 1 than Dykes was, but he has to build his team with his personnel that he needs to do what he wants to do. I think he will be fine by year 3. Probably needs a new DC, that was awful! We made UNT look like UT.
