Re: New media deal

Yeah, is it the world's greatest deal? No. Do tuesday night games suck for travelling fans? Yes. Do I think this is a good deal for us? Yes.

We sacrifice two home games a year not being on a Saturday (or a Thursday or Friday based on some previous experiences) for a night where we will be one of the only two teams playing on ESPN and a much easier fan experience for watching our games. I think the increased visibility is worth it and part of CUSA's perception problem the last few years is that people didn't see our games on TV. CUSA has shown in bowl games that it can be just as good and if not better than the sunbelt most years, but the sunbelt grew in strength perception because they played on Tuesday nights and fans got to see the teams actually play. While we laughed at the idea at playing on tuesday, people actually saw there games in places while ours would probably never be turned on outside of a money/body bag game.
Conference USA Announces Multimedia Rights Deal - Conference USA

CBS Sports Network with tier one selection status for C-USA football (18 games annually)

ESPN linear networks will carry eight midweek football games per season via the October midweek scheduling.
Current: 17 CBSSN + Title / 12 Stadium; 14 teams ~ 56 conference games / 28 nonconference home games = ~ 84 games (CUSA Home Games)
    Future: 18 CBSSN + Title / 8 ESPN Networks; 9/10 teams ~ 36/40 games / 18/20 nonconference home games = ~ 54/58 games (CUSA Home Games)

Current: 29 of 84 games on TV (12 on stadium) or ~35% of games / remaining on ESPN+
    Future: 26 of 54/58 on TV or ~ 48/45%

Definitely a better percentage of games on TV, but it will suck to not be able to attend some.

I might’ve missed it somewhere, but I can’t see the Ruston restaurants being very pleased with losing what has to be a better money making game day on a Saturday than the likely reduced fan count for a week night game. Wouldn’t it make good business sense for a University and the city it’s in to work together for the betterment of both. Obviously the key is, “make good business sense,” which is debatable if Tech ever does that.

I mean we were there for the UTEP game and Ruston was pretty dead.

With success, our midweek attendance could still surpass our current Saturday attendance. We still won’t reach full potential on a weeknight even with a ton of success. Not while 1,000 of our 12,000 students attend games no matter how good we are. Not when families pick other more affordable options for weeknight or Saturday entertainment. We have many things wrong with our athletics. It doesn’t feel like we are making strides to fix any of it. It feels like we are plodding along in concrete shoes.

Well, at least students won’t be home for the weekend or able to go to another school’s game on those days…

Yep, it could help draw a few more students. Some WAC games were during the week and had good attendance.

Our administration has to get involved. For starters, let the students know how important they are to the teams and the university.

This is nearly double $425,000/year each C-USA school currently receives. @SBJ 1st reported C-USA’s 5-year deal
The fact that this contract will earn us almost double the old contract is a huge win in my book given the state of C-USA. Mid-week games are terrible for those of us out of town, but it's time to make some lemonade out of the lemons we have been gifted and use this to get students in the seats and get future alumni excited about the program.

As soon as the home Wednesday game is announced, make sure Terry, Karl, Willie, Paul, Trace, Kix, Sonja and Leon (even Phil) have their calendars cleared. It'd be cool to have Tech's "First-Name" royalty present.

The ESPN portion of the deal is probably Disney dollars and is just a coverage deal. The CBS portion of the deal is where probably most if not all of the hard cash comes from.

Let me start the eulogy for cusa.tv. With all of the snafus on Monday, we can officially pronounce cusa.tv dead and buried at the end of this school year. That can't be considered a negative by anyone.

How many current Tech students were alive to watch any of the people mentioned play sports? Surely Tech has some more recent success stories.

I wish we could get Brooks and Dunn to have an after game concert. Seems like that’s something that Kix could put together.
