It’s truly amazing how stupid smart people are to get something like this so wrong from the beginning. The same is true in a lot of things these days. Stupid is the new norm.
2,000 players went thru the portal this year? OMG. That's ridiculous. They've got to do something to put some limits on that. This is crazy. It's got to be very, very difficult to do any kind of long range planning for a football program with portal numbers like that. You almost can't hold a coach accountable for success anymore, due to all the transfers.
NCAA tightens restrictions on second-time transfers
Waivers will no longer be granted for athletic reasons, including lack of playing time or “position preference.” Academic preferences (i.e., availability of major courses of study) will also no longer be considered.
This is great. I’m ok with a player realizing he made the wrong decision at 18 and wanting to go elsewhere for any reason he wants. The ability to “school hop” year-to-year is what was turning me against college football. I love the freedom to change your school once without sitting out. This is great for teams like us in keeping Hank and Decoldest and whoever we get that we usually wouldn’t have the chance to sign out of high school. Let’s go!!!
Also could make some guys take the leap and take that huge offer knowing they have one chance to transfer without losing a year… I’m sure some guys don’t take the P5 offer and come to Tech because they think they’ll play earlier. Now, this guy may take the bigger offer and the chance, knowing he can transfer down if needed without sitting a year. Then we can rack up some 3-4 star guys that have been coached by guys making wayyyy more money than we can pay.
I can see what y’all are saying about getting some maybe higher ranked and semi experienced players who transfer down so to speak, but one thing is for sure, we had better be relevant enough for them to want to come to Tech. No good player worth having is transferring to a crappy bottom of the conference team like we almost are. Tech has to bounce back in a big way this year otherwise we’re going to be furthermore cementing ourselves as a cellar dweller. Having pointed out the bleak side of what could be, I’m still optimistic that Cumbie will turn things right this year.
Jack Abraham is happy that this rule wasn't in place during his college football career.
HD, Keep in mind this includes the players who are being forced out, probably the majority of kids in the portal.
Back in our day you didn't hear about these kids as much. When the roster came out in the spring they were the kids who showed up in a small newspaper blurb as either having quit or transferred out to a smaller school. Most never saw the field. It was no big deal. In reality their scholarships just weren't renewed.
In the "portal era" it's harder to differentiate between those players and those truly looking for a better opportunity and using the portal as a means to do so.
Also, it's frustrating to hear national reporters talk about the portal and can't grasp this basic fact.
