    That's part of it.

But there is much more to the story. From the moment Loyd got the job he had alums who had supported the program under Eagles and Russo actively working against him.

Everybody wanted somebody else when he was hired. Couple that with the fact word began to surface that what Coach Eagles was asking for when he left was very reasonable and Reneau wouldn't budge left many of our biggest supporters bitter. So Loyd had no support from the start. Completely left out in the cold.

Paul Miller, the AD who hired him, was fired, in part, for hiring Loyd. And Jerry Stovall, who replaced Miller, and who could have helped the situation, turned out to be a complete dud in the job.

Jerry couldn't get players real summer jobs, much less the no show jobs our competitors were giving their players. Not to mention the fact our competitors were raining cash on recruits and transfers from other schools, something we just didn't do.

At the time I was naive enough to believe race didn't have anything to do with it. It was obvious, over time, I was completely wrong.

Unfortunately, Jerry got bitter about it all. That only made the spiral worse.

At the same time, when Jerry had talent, both at Tech and Dillard, he turned in winning seasons.

Getting rid of Paul Miller was the biggest mistake ever made at Tech involving athletics. Jerry Stovall was an empty suit, and being in the LSU HOF, had no interest in Tech being successful.

Dan Reneau set Tech athletics back tremendously during his tenure, especially during the critical period of the 90’s. Les Guice seems to be clueless when it comes to athletics.

    Re: The Exodus Begins

Reneau set Tech athletics back tremendously? Hmmm... let's see what has happened in recent years to address this so-called set back.

    Football: 6 straight bowl wins
MBB: Under White and Konkol enjoyed success close to on-par with the best in history
    WBB: Ummm, ugh.
Baseball: Back-to-back trips to the NCAAs, and one under Goff too.

Now, I am among those who doesn't accept any of this as being our highwater mark, I think Tech can achieve more. And, I think the ceilings each of these coaches kept bumping into reflects a weakness on their part...look at White at UF and now UGA, not exactly setting the world on fire. But his, and the others', faults are NOT the fault of Reneau. They were all "good" coaches with a measure of success here, meaning the entire Tech Athletic Department had not descended into some deep hole, because of Reneau, and it is just the reality of the level of quality of the coaches/players who have played at Tech.

It is purely intellectual laziness to point the finger at Reneau, again, and again, and again...and how long has Guice been president? Yeah, exactly.

    Re: The Exodus Begins

Well, will they stay or will they go after the 2023-2024 season? Anyone heard about anyone jumping ship to go somewhere else? The exodus had already begun by this time last year.

TFG (The Former Guy Konkol) finished 16 -15 in year 2 at Tulsa. TFFG White finished 17 - 16 at Georgia. Meanwhile Dusty May is dancing with FAU.

Would we have been able to keep Dusty? I’m having trouble remember if and how hard we tried.

If we had it would have been for two years, he'd have led us to some post season successes, and then been gone to greener pastures.

We would have made the NCAA Tournament with Dusty before he left.

Boy wonder had to get Koolaid Konkol.

I think Tech is cursed worse than the Cubs.

    We did -

He BOMBED the interview really bad...

Came in ill prepared with what seemed little to no preparation

He was standoffish and gave off an air that he felt it was below him to have to be going through the process -
    ''Don't be a bad dagh..."

So, he was a jerk about it. I remember that now. So, would we be better off with jerk coaches like May, Mulkey, and Dooley? Or players coaches like Brooke, Skippy, Konkol, and Burroughs?

Not really looking for a response to that. Just typing and thinking.

Where the program was at at that time coming off what White had done over a 3 year period -

An unproven assistant bombing an interview? Where Konkol blew them away and was coming off a Final Four run with Laranagra (sp?) at George Mason and an Elite Eight with him at Miami

Konkol had basically the same success (an argument could be made that he had actually more since he won the consolation game in the NIT) as White and was eventually hired away also, even though his teams were not as exciting as White's

You know my theory - any Tech HC that stays over 5 years has out stayed their welcome

Mulkey - I personally think was a severe clash of egos as much as it was dollars (she was promised the 5th year but they stripped the camp money away from her) and she really didn't want to be the one that followed the legend -

Dooley really wasn't a good coach - he did serve a wake up call to some important eyes as AD but has had NO real success at any level after left here
    ''Don't be a bad dagh..."

    Re: The Exodus Begins

I have expressed the same recently. I want coaches who want to make the big time and don’t love Ruston. Maybe that means we have a coach that recruits talent in the first year or 2, has success and moves on in year 4-5. Maybe he even takes the talent with him for their junior or senior season. I won’t like that, but it may be the reality.

Back to the theme of the thread two guys (Henderson and Turner) hit the portal today.

Athletics in this state are one and done players.
