I’m starting to sense a pattern…
Three California Jucos.
That’s a bold strategy. We’ll see how it works out for them.
Newman is a coaches son with a 52/40/91 shooting split. That’s impressive
Guys like you amaze me. You sat here --just like the rest of us-- and you watched Hester completely tear down a really good basketball team. Not only did he embarrass the university with more losses than we've seen at Tech in probably 10 years, but he even managed to run off almost all of the players who still had eligibility remaining. He all but burned the men's basketball program to the ground. IN ONE YEAR!!
And yet, you sit there now and say, "this 2nd year is the real test for me".
Remember, it takes 3 bad years to replace him (not that we can afford to).
I don't believe people "scoffed" at you. People are just holding their breath and hoping it isn't so- and know it could be.lol He has a lot of improvement to make this next season- comparisons to Jerry were easy to make last year. Just as in football, expectations are for next season to be better- they have to be!
Jerry Lloyd went from a 7-win season to a 2-win season the following year. THIS is what I was hoping to avoid by firing Hester now (this year). But no, LA Tech has to do everything the HARD way.

Anyone that has been around a while is familiar with the Lloyd years. I was in school when Karl was there, and then when Tommy Joe was coach. My sister and I were in Dallas when we played Oklahoma and were big fans. Lloyd killed any interest I had in following TECH basketball. Basketball and football have lots of work to do! I hope this is the worst we ever see for both of those programs and can move forward.
The difference is that Cumbie was left an empty locker room. Most of those players on the roster probably should have never been recruited. Holtz phoned in recruiting the last several years. Credit to Cumbie for going out and bringing in transfers and contributors. I would say a lot of our starters this year weren't even on the team last year.
Hester didn't have an empty locker room. He had the same squad Konkol had minus Lofton plus a healthy Crawford. This should have been a decent year. Instead it looked like keystone cops. Often with the team in disarray.
As I said, year two will be telling. He went 15-18 this year with a 2nd round tournament bounce. (BTW once he lost Cobe - the season was done) If he drops down to single digit wins this coming season it will be a long road to recovery. I hope he knows what he's doing bringing in California Jucos.
