La Tech bowling returns to another regional

    https://latechsports.com/news/2023/4...-regional.aspx

Regional Time ... Tech drew McKendree and Sam Houston which is a tough draw. The path to an NCAA title starts here ...

Re: La Tech bowling returns to another regional

BTW, one of the main reasons I love team bowling as a competitive sport is that it currently is where women's basketball was in the late 70's - early 80's.

Tech is a relatively early adopter at the NCAA level ...

Small schools can not only compete, they can thrive. If a team puts enough resources to get a good coach that can recruit some top tier Junior Gold talent AND develop that talent, you can have a highly competitive team.

As a local HS coach who has a vested interest in the growth of the sport I would LOVE to see all the SEC add teams mostly because I would like to see more scholarships available and have incentives for local houses to run the type of competitive environments they will see in college, especially on the girls side -- where the bulk of scholarships are.

Yes. SHSU and McKendree were two tough teams in that regional this season. --- You can't think in traditional terms when it comes to college bowling. The whole scene is wildly confusing even for someone who is a bowling person.

There is NCAA bowling and then there is USBC Intercollegiate bowling. USBC is United States Bowling Congress which is like the national governing board for the sport and manages things like league rules, Team USA etc.

SOME schools only compete NCAA - Nebraska is one
SOME schools only compete in USBC intercollegiate - Wichita State is one
SOME schools do both (we do both)

That gives us a shot at an NCAA title which WE (as general sports fans) care about and it gives us a shot at USBC intercollegiate championships (teams, singles). The interesting thing about USBC intercollegiate bowling is that club teams can compete and there are far more universities in this pool and SOME schools just do USBC and give scholarships for it. My son, for example, bowled on the LSU club bowling team and they have qualified for regionals in the past. Still, it is hard to compete with programs that grab the top bowling kids like NCAA programs which have scholarships and some USBC only schools do offer scholarships. Louisiana Tech has a club boys team as well and some of those kids were wizards at the HS level which is easy house shots but college bowling is on sport shots and there is a big gap that needs to be bridged there for kids who were not bowling sport from a young age. Clubs have to raise their own funds. Still, when they go to the bigger tournaments like the one in Vegas they are bowling against kids that will eventually end up bowling in the PBA or PWBA.

Down to Vanderbilt and Arkansas State. National championship match tonight. Vandy coming out of the losers bracket lost to ASU earlier. Both of these teams are representing the Southland bowling league.

Should we pour tens of dollars into our bowling program so we can do something athletically at a National level?

Glad to see the conference is adding a team with a first year program. It is going to be a long season for them unless they had an unreal class come in.

This is the equivalent of the SEC in womens bowling. NCAA champ and runner up were from what is now CUSA.
