    Local Politics

Natchitoches Parish goes to the polls tomorrow to vote on a measure to transfer 4 mills from the parish library to the highway department for the horrible roads. It represents about $1.6 million annually. The misinformation, the propaganda tossed around by the supporters of the library has been amazing. Will be interesting to see the turnout.

And, I think Ouachita Parish will be voting on a parish wide sales tax to build and support an animal shelter. That's what I heard. One of you who lives there chime in, please. I am interested because Natchitoches is in dire need of a new animal shelter, but of course has no money to build one.

In the bigger picture, watching all the crap being said, being posted in social media and elsewhere by "Friends of the Library" when they have to know we know the truth is simply amazing. Guess they subscribe to the theory if you tell a lie long enough and loud enough it becomes the truth. Now, just imagine what the real truth is about issues at the state and federal level. Some of you KNOW what that is, and some of you (dems) are just clueless.

Libraries are glorified wi-fi providers now. Ouachita parish has wasted millions in brand new facilities over the past several years. You'll rarely see more than a couple of cars there on any given day or time.

Natchitoches would be like DeSoto and reject a tax to fund an animal shelter.

I see the tax in Ouachita is actually a property tax, not a sales tax, and for 1.75 mills. That millage wouldn't suffice to generate enough funds in Natchitoches given the small and "poor" population. Some 40% are totally protected by the Homestead Exemption and pay $0 in ad valorum tax.

    Re: Local Politics

Proposition to reallocate 4 mills from the library to the highway department failed, 60-40% but with only a 15% turnout of registered voters. Apathy, disinterest, "no dog in that fight" as a good portion of the population use neither the library nor parish roads. Half the voters live in the city and have kind of decent streets to reach a state highway which are drivable, for the most part, to reach I-49 and never have to use a parish road. Most people don't even know where the library is, so they just didn't care.

But! also on the ballot yesterday was a renewal to fund parish wide ambulance services and two school board tax renewals. All of those passed, but again, only a 15% turnout. Personally, I have missed maybe 2 or 3 elections over the past 30 years, but none of those involved any big issues and I haven't not voted in probably some 15 years now. I vote.

"What's the use?" is a prominent sentiment. "The government is just gonna do what they want anyway, no matter how we vote." Two quotes from a Facebook page focused on politics/elections.

Typical expenditures for a Lousiana politician, note the $4,500 spent on LSU athletic event tickets...
