Lola Dunahoe was the lone dissenting vote. Part of the local contention against Henderson getting the Tech position. Lola Dunahoe was president of the NSU Foundation...may still be...and used her position to further her family's law practice. Can't really say anything that bad about the Dunahoe Law Firm because they are just like most lawyers: crooked, self-serving. You know Dr. Guice has had a succession plan in mind, even though it's not his responsibility. Henderson is an obvious choice to consider.
For the future succession plan I'd keep my eye on Dr. Davy Norris.

Steve Davison needs to explain to the Louisiana Tech Nation why he offered the motion to suspend the rules and allow Jim Henderson to be the only candidate to replace Les Guice as president.
Enlighten ignorant me by what authority he can offer a motion to suspend the rules.
Steve Davison is on the UL Board of Supervisors which govern all public colleges and universities in Louisiana except those in the LSU system. Jim Henderson is the current president of the UL Board of Supervisors. The rules for replacing a president of a college or university call for a search for interested candidates. Davison moved to suspend the search rules and 12 of the board members agreed with his motion. One board member voted against the motion. Davison was not alone, but he is an alum of Tech and a current resident of Lincoln Parish. He is probably closer to the pulse of Tech than any of the other members of the UL System Board of Supervisors.
Davison must have had a compelling reason to want to suspend the rules. Surely many concerned about the welfare of Louisiana Tech University want to know what his reason was.
Jim Henderson’s resume is extremely mediocre. Louisiana Tech has earned its reputation as a nationally recognized STEM research university. Henderson’s resume is devoid of anything related to STEM. Both Dan Reneau and Les Guice graduated Tech with engineering degrees, and their advanced degrees were STEM degrees. Louisiana Tech deserves much better than Jim Henderson has to offer.
The big boss can’t and shouldn’t necessarily be the subject matter expert in everything he’s ultimately responsible for like the STEM you speak of but rather he’s the big brain to identify all the subject matter experts, delegate the responsibilities to them and then hold those people accountable. I want whoever the next president is to be successful in absolutely everything Tech, not just this and that. Such a thing is possible under the right business minded person. Pure academic minded people have blinders in certain areas and therefore they’re not entirely successful. Tech’s last 2 presidents prove this.
In general, I agree with you. Universities should be/need to be run by MBAs. The president of the university doesn't have to be an expert in content, that's what the faculty and deans are for, to make sure the academic standards are high in their colleges. But! that's not the reality of the dinosaurs known as universities. Unfortunately, I don't think Henderson has an expertise in business; he was a journalism major undergrad, and that is generally when someone garners the knowledge particular to fields of study and professionalism.
Bachelor degree - journalism - NSU
Master degree - administration - West Florida
Doctorate - management - Maryland.
Are those advanced degrees business-related or public/government administration?
Here's the bottom line...Tech deserves to have a proper search.

It is impossible to be certain that we have the best possible candidate when there is only one possible candidate being considered.

Got one Yay vote for Henderson last night, Was at a fundraiser dinner for our local animal rescue organization and was seated at the table with a person definitely in-the-know about all things related to the ULS schools, and was even married years ago to a VERY important person related to LSU-BR. Anyway, this person said they are a bit surprised that there will be no proper search but that Tech and anyone associated with Tech, especially the current students, are going to love having Henderson as president. So, there ya go, FWIW.
Pipe dream scenario. Davison knows Henderson won’t survive Landry’s election. He persuaded the board to suspend protocol. Guaranty the job for Henderson. Now Stevie D has him over a barrel to perform above expectations or get fired and lose his awesome retirement.
